Following a general discussion on the effect of sea states on vessels at a meeting of the Technical Committee, held in London on 7 January 1976, those taking part were invited to submit written contributions, a selection of which is printed below.
P. H. Tanner (Glasgow University): It is a matter of experience for most small craft users that the steepest seas encountered in open waters are those that originate from the bow wave systems of passing ships. It is a matter of observation that these bow waves are of great persistence.
