A general programme of work with the overall aim of reducing the incidence of collisions in the Dover Strait has been commissioned by the Marine Division, Department of Trade and Industry. As part of the programme the Operational Research Unit in DTI is developing mathematical models of traffic flow, using inputs of data provided from the surveys mounted by NPL and described in the paper by Johnson and Wheatley.
