Call for Editor applications

The Classical Association is seeking an Editor for the Journal of Classics Teaching, with effect from March/April 2025.

The Journal of Classics Teaching aims to be the leading open access journal for teachers of Latin, ancient Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History internationally. JCT covers the primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors and publishes research articles and short book reviews of interest to Classics teachers. The successful candidate will play an important role in making pedagogical research accessible to classicists and historians worldwide.

The role includes: actively commissioning articles as well as processing those that are submitted unsolicited; copy-editing articles and book reviews using the online journal management platform Scholar 1; writing the editorial and contents list for each issue; receiving and marking up proofs and giving final approval for publication.

Essential skills: The role is suited to someone of established prominence in the field of Classics teaching with good knowledge of the Classics community; excellent networking and communication skills; be capable of working with attention to detail; be able to organize their time to meet deadlines; be able to work effectively with others; be able to deal diplomatically but firmly with authors.

You will need to be wholly or mainly UK based.

The role comes with an honorarium of £3,500 p.a. The term of office is normally five years, with the possibility of reappointment. The appointment is subject to a two-month introductory period during which notice is one month on either side. Although the role can be combined with full-time employment, the successful candidate would need to make time available each week to cover the workload.

Time commitment: This role requires a time commitment of c. 8 hours most weeks. Although there is a lot of flexibility in terms of when this role is performed, in practice the editor will need to attend to some emails on an almost daily basis.
