It is notable that there is a long list of “gloomy” titles in respect to country houses. Many of them appear in Mandler's bibliography (pp. 479 ff.). Marcus Binney's titles have almost always included some reference to the country house in decline, and he was a co-organizer of the 1974 Victoria and Albert Museum's exhibition evocatively entitled “The Destruction of the Country House, 1875–1975.” The Historic Houses Association, which also takes a professionally pessimistic view of the future, recently published a report entitled The Disintegration of Heritage, written by Sayer, Michael (London, 1993)Google Scholar.
