Ovipositional Responses of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) to Certain Locally Grown Maize Cultivars in Kenya

Abstract

The ovipositional responses of the stem-borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), to the maize cultivar Inbred A are greater than the maize cultivar, Nyamula. These responses are elicited by certain characters of the plants that are perceivable prior to the moth's arrival on the plants (distance-perceivable) as well as those perceivable after arrival on the plants (contact-perceivable). Distance-perceivable characters were not found to be responsible for the difference in the oviposition on the two cultivars tested.

The contact-perceivable characters of the maize cultivars differ in eliciting oviposition by moths. Contact with the cultivar Nyamula elicits much less oviposition than with the other cultivar tested.

Résumé

La reponse a la ponte de l'insecte terebrant de la tige, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), sur l'éspèce du maïs inne a est plus elevée que sur l'espece Nyamula. Ces reponses ont ete provoquées par certaines originalités des plantes qui sont perceptibles avant l'arrivée des phalenes sur les plantes (perceptible a distance) ainsi que celles perceptibles apres l'arrivée sur les plantes (perceptible au contact). Les caratères perceptibles a distance ne furent pas responsable pour la difference dans la ponte sur les especes de plantes testés. Les caractères perceptibles au contact de deux especes de mais se differentient pour provoquer la ponte chez les phalènes. Le contact avec l'espece Nyamula provoquent une ponte moindre que les autres éspèces testées.
