Needs for training in entomology

Abstract

Data is provided on available short courses in plant protection and on FAO's training activities. FAO's findings on training needs of manpower for agriculture and rural development in Africa are briefly discussed. The need for a national plan for plant protection which can be implemented gradually is stressed. Such plans should be the basis for identifying realistic training needs. Regional co-operation for providing post-graduate training in plant protection is required. Training is especially needed in developing and in introducing safe, economic and effective plant protection measures at farm level. To achieve this, a multi-disciplinary approach is required and relevant training should be given to administrators, researchers, extension personnel and farmers. Of the various subject matters of entomology, in particular, more training is needed in biological control, being one of the cornerstones of the IPM strategy.

Résumé

Des informations sont données sur les divers cours en matière de protection des végétaux ainsi que sur les activités de formation offertes par la FAO. Les conclusions de la FAO sur la nécessité de former la main-d'oeuvre afin de favoriser le développement agricole et rural en Afrique sont présentées brièvement. Le besoin de formuler un plan national pour la protection des végétaux qui serait mis en place graduellement est souligné. C'est à partir de tels plans que l'on pourrait identifier les besoins réels en formation. La coopération régionale est essentielle pour que la formation en protection des végétaux puisse être dispensée au niveau post-universitaire. La formation est indispensable pour le développement ou l'introduction de mesures de protection des végétaux sûres, efficaces et économiques au niveau de la ferme. Pour atteindre cet objectif, une approche multidisciplinaire est nécessaire et une formation adéquate devrait être donnée aux administrateurs, aux chercheurs, au personnel de vulgarisation et aux fermiers. Si l'on considère l'entomologie en général, les besoins en formation sont très importants dans un domaine particulier, à savoir le contrôle biologique, cet activité ayant un rôle fondamental dans la stratégie de la lutte intégrée.
