Influence of Diet on Life History and Predatory Capacity of Amblyseius zaheri Yousef & El-Brolossy (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

Abstract

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of diet on the biology and prédation capacity of the phytoseiid mite Amblyseius zaheri Yousef & El-Brolossy. The predatory mite was able to develop and reproduce when fed on nymphs of the twospotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, nymphs of the citrus brown mite Eutetranychus orientalis Klein, motile stages of the eriophyid mite Eriophyes dioscoridis Soliman & Abou-Awad, eggs of the scale insect Parlatorio ziziphus Lucas, nymphs of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) and pollen grains of date palm, Phoenix dactylifera. The predatory mite's development was fastest on a diet of nymphs of Er. dioscoridis. All of the diets led to a female-biased progeny, which was most pronounced in predators fed on date palm pollen. The results are discussed in light of the biological control capacity of the phytoseiid mite.

Résumé

Des expérimentations de laboratoire ont été réalisées afin d'étudier les effets de l'alimentation sur la biologie et la capacité prédatrice de l'acarien phytoséide Amblyseius zaheri Yousef & El-Brolossy. L'acarien prédateur est capable de se développer et de se reproduire lorsqu'il est alimenté avec des nymphes de l'acarien à deux points Tetranychus urticae Koch, des nymphes de l'acarien brun du citronnier Eutetranychus orientélis Klein, des stades mobiles de l'acarien eriophyide Eriophyes dioscoridis Soliman & Abou-Awad, d'oeufs de la cochenille Parlatoria ziziphus Lucas, de nymphes de la mouche blanche Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) et de grains de pollen du palmier dattier Phoenix dactylifera. Le développement de l'acarien prédateur est plus rapide lorsqu'il est alimenté avec des nymphes d'E. dioscoridis. Tous les régimes alimentaires induisent une descendance biaisée en faveur des femelles, qui est cependant plus prononcée chez les prédateurs alimentés avec du pollen de palmier dattier. On discute des résultats à la lumière des capacités de contrôle biologique du phytoséide.
