Hatching pattern and survival of first instars of Ectropis excursaria (Guenee) (Geometridae: Lepidoptera)

Abstract

In field conditions in South Australia hatching of eggs of Ectropis excursaria showed a morning and an afternoon peak. In the laboratory, hatching coincided with “lights-on” stimulus at 20°C, 10:14 and 12:12 L:D. Increase or decrease of temperature by 5°C shifted the start of hatching to late scotophase while increasing photoperiod shifted a substantial proportion of hatching to later in photophase. Survival of first instars was linearly related to saturation-deficit of the atmosphere.

Résumé

L'eclosion des oeufs de l'Ectropis excursaria sous des conditions naturelles sur le terrain au sud de l'australie a donne des pics dans Ia matinée et l'aprésmidi. Au laboratoire l'eclosion coincidait avec la presence de la lumiere a 20°C, 10:14 et 12:12 LD (lumière et sans lumière). La croissance ou decroissance de la temperature de 5°C a changé le debut de l'eclosion jusqu'a la derniere phase du processus. La photoperiode croissant a changé une proportion substantielle de l'eclosion des oeufs. La survie des larves du premier stage etait relativement reliée à la saturation et deficit de l'atmosphere.
