Growth regulator activity of the xerophytic perennial plant, Agave cantala Roxb. on diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae)

Abstract

The xerophytic perennial plant, Agave cantala Roxb. was studied for its biological activity on diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.). When cabbage leaves treated with acetone extract of A. cantala leaf were fed to the larvae in all instars, the extract was found to be weakly toxic at the highest concentration of 60 mg/ml, but it prolonged the larval and pupal periods, decreased the percentage of adult emergence and adult longevity. The fecundity and egg hatchability of adults emerging from final instar larvae fed with treated leaves decreased significantly. The eggs laid on treated leaves showed reduced hatchability.

Résumé

En raison de son activité biologique sur la Plutella xylostella (L.), une phalène en forme de diamant, la plante xérophitique umnoretell, l'Agava cantala Roxb. a fait l'objet d'une étude de recherche.

A n'importe quelle étape de leur évolution, si des larves étaient norries aux feuilles de choc qui n'ont été traitées à l'extrait de l'acétone du feuillage de l'A. cantala, cet extrait afficait une toxicité très faible même à une haute concentration de 60 mg/ml; cependant la durée de l'état de larves et de chrisalides en était prolongée. Ce qui, en conséquence, réduisait aussi bien le volume que la longévité de la population adulte qui découlait de celles-ci.

La fecondité ainsi que la capacité d'éclosion des oeufs des adultes issues des larves qui avaient été nourriés aux feuilles traitées à l'extrait de l'acétone diminuaient très sensiblement.

De même on a observé une dimunition de la capacité d'éclosion chez des oeufs déposés sur les feuilles ayant été traitées de la même manière.
