Efficacy of a Deltamethrin-based Pour-on in the Control of Tick-borne Diseases and Trypanosomosis in Kwale District, Kenya

Abstract

A one-year longitudinal study was conducted in 92 smallholder diary farms in Kwale district of Kenya, to evaluate the efficacy of Spot-on® (a 10 % deltamethrin pour-on) in the control of East Coast fever, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and trypanosomosis. A comparison of the annual incidence and mortality rates from these diseases was made among four Spot-on® application regimes: biweekly, monthly, bimonthly and untreated control groups. The incidence of East Coast fever, ranging from 2.6 to 6.8% among the treated animals, was significantly lower than in the control group (18.8%). Anaplasmosis incidence ranged from 2.6 to 13.5%, but the differences among the treatments were not statistically significant. There were only seven confirmed cases of babesiosis and therefore no statistical comparisons of the incidence rates were made. The incidence rates of trypanosomosis in the biweekly- (28.2 %) and monthly-treated animals (38.6 %) were statistically lower than in the bimonthly (63.9 %) and control groups (72.6 %). It was concluded that monthly application of Spoton® could significantly reduce the incidence of tick-borne diseases and trypanosomosis in cattle in the coastal lowlands.

Résumé

Une étude a été conduite pendant un an chez 92 petits fermiers dans le district de Kwale au Kenya, afin dáévaluer l'efficacité du Spot-on® (10 % de deltamethrine) sur le contrôle des fièvres de la région côtière, l'anaplasmose, la babesiose et la trypanosomose. Une comparaison des taux annuels de prévalence et de mortalité provoquées par ces maladies a été menée selon quatre modalités d'application du Spot-on®: bimensuel, mensuel, bimestriel et témoin. La prévalence des fièvres de la région côtière, comprise entre 2,6 et 6,8 % chez les animaux traités, est significativement plus faible que chez les animaux témoins (18,8 %). La prévalence de’ l'anaplasmose est comprise entre 2,6 et 13,5 %, mais les différences entre les traitements ne sont pas statistiquement différents. Onze cas de babesiose ayant été confirmés, aucune comparaison statistique sur les taux de prévalence n'a pu être faite. Les taux de prévalence de la trypanosomose chez les animaux traités bimensuellement (28,2 %) et mensuellement (38,6 %) sont statistiquement plus faibles que ceux des animaux traités bimensuellement (63,9 %) et témoins (72,6 %). En conclusion, l'application mensuelle de Spot-on® pourrait réduire significativement la prévalence des maladies transmises par les tiques chez le bétail dans la région côtière.
