In a recent review of host location by tsetse an attempt was made, using previously published data, to draw some general conclusions regarding the range of detection of warm-blooded hosts by tsetse and mosquitoes. The paper included some misleading and invalid conclusions. This topic and the supporting data are reconsidered. It is suggested that the maximum range of a positive response by mosquitoes or tsetse to stationary cattle baits may be expressed as 0.31 × host weight (kg)0.90 (P < 0.001).
