Diel activity pattern of the tsetse fly Glossina austeni Newstead (Diptera: Glossinidae) in the field and in the laboratory

Abstract

The diel activity patter n of Glossina austeni was studied on the south coast of Kenya, and in the laboratory. In the field, flies were sampled hourly by continuous catch from a standing vehicle, or by traps. In the laboratory, observations were made of the flies' take-off-responses to host odour at various times of the diel cycle, in a flight chamber. The results showed that G. austeni is day-active with some activity throughut the daylight hours, but with significant peaks occurring at 09.00–10.00h and between 14.00 and 17.00h, i.e. a roughly V-shaped pattern.

Résumé

Une etude sur le rythme d'activite journaliere de la mouche tsetse de l'espece Glossina austeni a ete menee dans la partie sud de la cote du Kenya et au laboratoire dans une chambre aerodynamique. Les objectifs principaux etaient de determiner si cette espece a une activite diurne, ou crepusculaire, et aussi determiner son cycle d'agressivite en etudient le rhythme d'activite en presence de l'odeur de l'hote. Deux methodes ont ete utilisees sur le terrain et une seule au laboratoire: capture continue a partir d'un vehicle et usage des pieges; au laboratoire, des observations ont ete faites dans une chambre aerodynamique. Les resultats ont montre de faconculuante que G. austeni est une espece a comportement diurne dont l'activite est manifeste tout au long de la lumiere du jour, soit de 06h00 environ jusqu'a 18h00, avec des pics significatifs survenant a la mi-matin (0900–lOOOh) et en milieu d'apres-midi (1400–1700h environ). Le rhythme qui s'en etait degage est globalement en forme de U ou de V.
