Breeding for resistance to shootfly and stem-borer in sorghum

Abstract

A number of resistance sources have been identified against two major pests of sorghum, viz the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rondani, and the stem-borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). These identified sources of resistance were generally tall, late maturing and poor yielders. Two of these identified sources of resistance, viz. BP 53 and M 35-I, have been utilized in the breeding programme, by crossing with dwarf exotic types, which are highly susceptible to both the pests, but are agronomically desirable varieties. The crosses thus obtained were screened for their reaction to the two pests. An extensive screening programme was carried out under heavy levels of shootfly and stem-borer infestation from 1968 to 1980, which resulted in the identification of nine advanced generation derivatives possessing moderate to high levels of resistance to both shootfly and stem-borer as well as desirable agronomic characters.

The derivatives with M 35-I, as one of the parents showed more resistance to shootfly as compared to derivatives with BP 53, as one of the parents. However, in the case of resistance to stem-borer, the reverse was true.

Résumé

Quelques sources de sorghum out été developées contre deux pestes majeurs de sorghum par exemple shootfly, Atherigona soccata (Rondani) et stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Généralement ces sources de resistance out été hautes. Elles out mûri tard dounant les récoltes pauvres. Parni ces sources de resistance, deux varieties par exemple, BP 53 et M 35-1 out été utilisées en programme d'élevage en métissant avec les types nains exotiques qui sont fortement sensible à toute les deux pestes, mais its sont des varieties souhaitables an point de vue d'agronomie. Les métis obtenues ainsi out été mis à l'épreuve pour leur réactions contre les deux pestes. Depuis 1968 à 1980 il if a été une grande programme de l'épreuve sous les ni veaux frès élevés de la infestation de shootfly et stem borer. Cette programme a abouti à la identification de heuf derivations plus avancées que nos jours ayant les niveaux modérés ou frès élevés de resistance contre les deux pestes-shootfly et stemborer ettes ont aussi des qualités sonhaitable an point de vue d'agronomie.

Les derivations obtennes en utilisant M 35-1 comme un des parents out en plus resistance contre shootfly que les derivations obtermes en utilisant BP-53 comme un des parents. Nearmoins, C'était le contraire en cas de resistance contre stem borer.
