a) From 9 to 11, a “Science and Technology” curriculum is extensively provided by primary schools :

“Pupils, through some aspects of the scientific approach, are encouraged to develop their abilities to formulate questions and logical answers through a wide scope of investigative and practical observations and other scientific activities such as collecting measures, linking data, interpreting documents“ - extract from the official syllabus which includes the following chapters :

5. • nutrition.

The status of teaching Astronomy in European countries is variable. Sometimes Astronomy appears as a compulsory subject or as an optional subject, but on many occasions Astronomy appears within another subject, depending on the country. It is even possible for Astronomy not to appear anywhere in the curriculum. But of course the position here is better than in other less developed places. In Europe there are various topics which can be organized into two main groups: aspects related to relative motions and aspects related to properties of light. Some examples of teaching activities and materials in various countries will be described.

It is also necessary to emphasize several initiatives such as the review of Astronomy curricula, the publication of general books on Astronomy for secondary schools and the organisation of new journals to promote Astronomy in schools.

Astronomy is, inherently, a high-interest subject. However, at the high school level there is a tendency to teach astronomy using higher- level abstractions and complex mathematics. This teaching approach thus eliminates a large number of students who have difficulties with abstractions and complex mathematics, thereby restricting the study of astronomy to a rather select group of students.

The astronomy course offered since 1976 at Wauwatosa West High School was developed to reach a wide range of students with differing abilities. The prerequisite for this one-semester elective course is the successful completion of one year of high school science. Most of the students enrolled in this course are high school juniors and seniors, ages 16–18. Since algebra is not a prerequisite, the “math phobic“students have been attracted to the course.

Most textbooks of physics present the terrestrial orbit by a drawing which shows an ellipse of substantial eccentricity. This suggests a remarkable variation of the distance between Sun and Earth during the year up to a value of about 3:1 and more. Imagine the dramatic variation in size of the radiating area of the Sun seen by the terrestrial inhabitants with all the terrible consequences for temperature. All this is not true. There is no obvious change in size of the solar disc.

A cultural role of astronomical education at all levels is well known and it is needless to repeat the corresponding arguments. Nobody denies it, but nobody can propose any universal way of introducing Astronomy on a level this branch of science deserves.

There is a good tradition to appreciate Astronomy in Russian schools. For more than a century part of the natural history science in school dedicated to the Universe has been considered as a separate part of the school curriculum in Russia. Before 1917 it was named Cosmography, and Astronomy thereafter. And up to now there is no decision or prescription to rule it out of the school program.

This activity was originally developed by a group of teachers in Japan during 1960s under the influence of the American Curriculum-Reform Movement. This was used in Earth Sciences in order to develop the students’ cognitive skill. Kepler had been trying to analyze Tycho's observations of Mars, fitting them into the Copernican orbital system. It simply would not work. The problem is with the circular orbit that the Copernican system still used. Mars obviously did not have a circular orbit about the Sun. So Kepler tried a variety of other geometrical shapes, until he finally found the ellipse.

We describe a partnership approach in place at UC Berkeley's Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics (CEA) that: (a) facilitates the adaptation of astrophysics data and information from NASA and other sources for use in the K-12 classroom, (b) facilitates scientists’ participation in astronomy education, and (c) engages a sustained collaboration typically including personnel from research institutions, centers of informal science teaching such as museums and planetaria, university-based schools of education, and K-12 schools. We are investigating several ways of engaging scientists in partnerships for the purpose of making their research results accessible in appropriate ways to the K-12 community via Internet and World Wide Web technologies. Our investigation addresses the hypothesis that the transition of scientific data and research results from the workplace to the classroom can be facilitated by the joint creation of curriculum materials by teams of cognitive experts, subject-matter experts, and teachers.

There is no necessity to argue about a vital need of an extension of astronomy and space knowledge equivalent to a modern state of the natural sciences. Astronomy teaching both professionally and for amateurs in the form of general courses is particularly needed nowadays because of the spread of various forms of mysticism in Russia.

The main goal of astronomy teaching is to help students to become aware of the place of humanity in the Universe. In this connection it is necessary to study not only astronomy but also other relevant courses simultaneously. Such complex astronomy study plays a significant role. It is necessary to show a close interaction of astronomy with other sciences such as traditionally mathematics, physics, chemistry and also biology and psychology, which just begin to be integrated in the field of space sciences.

Comets and quasars, black holes and the big bang, pulsars and planets all feature in the media and excite people to find out more - astronomy might be described as the popular face of modern science. In the UK, recent changes in Advanced Level (A-level) physics courses mean that many students have the option of studying astrophysics to a depth beyond the merely descriptive. This option is proving popular with teachers and students, but presents particular challenges shared by few other areas of A-level physics courses.

Students, young and old, find the existence of extraterrestrial life one of the most intriguing of all science topics. The theme of searching for life in the universe lends itself naturally to the integration of many scientific disciplines for thematic science education. Based upon the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), the Life in the Universe (LITU) curriculum project at the SETI Institute developed a series of six teachers guides, with ancillary materials, for use in elementary and middle school classrooms, grades 3 through 9. Lessons address topics such as the formation of planetary systems, the origin and nature of life, the rise of intelligence and culture, spectroscopy, scales of distance and size, communication and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Each guide is structured to present a challenge as the students work through the lessons. The six LITU teachers guides may be used individually or as a multi-grade curriculum for a school.

The Astronomy Village multimedia program is designed to emphasize the process of science as much as its content (Pompea and Blurton, 1995; Pompea, 1996). It was designed for 14 year-old students, but has been used at slightly younger age levels and for older students, including university students. The investigations are flexible enough to be used at this wide variety of levels.

In this CD-ROM-based multimedia program, student teams can pursue one of ten research investigations. In each investigation they are guided by a mentor, receive e-mail, hear a lecture in the Village auditorium, and make observations using ground or space-based telescopes in a virtual observatory. The students also process data using the NIH Image image processing program. They keep a detailed logbook of their research activities and can run simulations on stellar evolution as well as manipulate 3-D astronomy visualization tools.

A few comments first on education in schools - this is a special worry here in the UK, where our international rankings are disappointing. An appreciation of science is vital not just for tomorrow's scientist and engineers, but for everyone who will live and work in a world even more underpinned by technology - and even more vulnerable to its failures and misapplications - than the present one. Even more important, the option of higher education in science and technology should not be foreclosed to them. There is widespread concern particularly about the 16-18 age group. Many of us put strong emphasis on broadening the curriculum for this group, which currently enforces unduly early specialisation here in England. Young people opting for humanities should not drop all science when they are 16.
