Eugen Weber cautions that literary statistics for this period are so unreliable that they “clearly must be taken with more than a few grains of salt.” However, he marshals impressionistic evidence suggesting that the rate of illiteracy in the central and southern départements probably exceeded fifty per cent in the early years of the Third Republic.
