The complete reduction of data from the ESA astrometry satellite Hipparcos, from some 1012 bits of photon counts and ancillary data to a catalogue of astrometric parameters and magnitudes for the 100 000 programme stars, will be independently undertaken by two scientific consortia, NDAC and FAST. This approach is motivated by the size and complexity of the reductions and to ensure the validity of the results. The end product will be a single, agreed-upon catalogue. This paper describes briefly the principles of reduction and the organisation and status within each consortium.
