A diverse assemblage of Carboniferous plant fossils occurs in the upper Benxi Formation at the Kaihuagou Section near Taiyuan, Shanxi, China. It consists of impressions and fusain fragments, the latter revealing anatomical details. Unlike previously published assemblages from the Benxi Formation, there are no pteridosperms, but a predominance of noeggerathioids and fern fragments. There are three new species: Achlamydocarpon taiyuanensis, Conchophyllum suboblongifolium, and the first reported example of a Selaginella from the Carboniferous System of China, S. benxiensis. The arborescent lycophytes do not to belong to Lepidodendron, as previously claimed, but to Synchysidendron, and three new combinations are therefore proposed for species from the Benxi Formation: S. galeatum, S. subrhombicum and S. tripunctatum. The Benxi Formation flora represents a transition between the tropical swamp vegetation represented in the Westphalian floras of Europe and North America, and the Stephanian and Permian Cathaysian floras of China. It is evidence of an essential continuity between the Late Palaeozoic vegetation of the western and eastern tropics, which should be united as a single phytochorion, the Amerosinian Realm.

Ion microprobe analyses of detrital zircons in the Te Akatarawa Terrane, New Zealand, reveal that the age of unfossiliferous turbidites overlying a fusuline- and coral-bearing limestone block olistostromal mélange is no older than 255±4 Ma (Late Permian). This is approximately 15 m.y. younger than the Kungurian age of the fusulinid limestone. We interpret this to indicate collapse of a Permian oceanic seamount as it entered a subduction zone along the Pacific margin of Gondwana. These turbidites differ markedly in composition from adjoining Permian to Middle Triassic sand-stones of the Torlesse Terrane. Detrital zircon age data indicate predominantly Permian and Carboniferous ages for source rocks supplying the Te Akatarawa turbidites, but also reveal significant earlier Palaeozoic and Proterozoic components, ranging back to 1.9 Ga. The warm-water setting of limestone blocks and the short 15 m.y. time period between sedimentation and accretion onto a continental margin require the limestone to have formed in a low-latitude position probably off the northeast Australian (New Guinea) margin of Gondwana. Zircons within the sample underwent re-crystallization at around 230±11 Ma which may be related to alteration during accretion in a subduction zone environment. Over a period of 100 to 150 m.y. from 255 Ma the terrane underwent more than 5000 km translation along the continental margin southward to its current location as an exotic mini-terrane enclosed within the New Zealand Torlesse Terrane.

Recent detailed studies on the Batain nappes (northeast coast of Oman), which represent a special part of the so-called ‘Oman Exotics’, have led to a better understanding of the Neotethyan geo-dynamic evolution. The Batain Exotics bear witness to volcanic activity, sea-level changes, tectonic instability, rifting and oceanization along the Eastern Oman margin during Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic times. They allow definition of the Batain basin as an aborted Permian branch of Neotethys. This marine basin was created in Early Permian times extending southward to the East African/ Madagascar region and was linked to the Karoo rift system. The presented revised classification of the Batain nappes considers the Batain basin to be no longer a part of the Hawasina basin and the Neotethyan margin proper. We attribute the Batain basin to a Mozambique–Somali–Masirah rift system (Somoma). This system started in Early Permian, times, creating a marine basin between Arabia and India/Madagascar; rifting in the Late Triassic and oceanization during Late Jurassic times led to the separation of East Gondwana.

A Nd isotope map of early Cambrian epeiric basins has been inferred from the Nd isotopic signature recorded in phosphatic Small Shelly Fossils. The most radiogenic εNd(t) values characterize water reservoirs along the Avalonian and Cadomian belts, while εNd(t) values of −10 to −20 were obtained in Laurentia and East Gondwanan Australia and China. Such a distribution of Nd isotope signatures results from the different provenance of early Cambrian epeiric seas: juvenile magmatic arcs and/or cordilleran for Mongolia, Siberia, Iberia and adjacent terranes, and cratonic sources for Laurentia and East Gondwana. Biogenic apatite of Small Shelly Fossils may be a useful tool for mapping of Nd isotope composition and documenting water mass exchange between discrete basins.

The Kraemer Island macrodyke that is exclusively exposed on Kraemer Island about 7 km west of the Skaergaard Intrusion belongs to a regional dyke swarm termed the ‘Skaergaard-like dykes’ (or FG-1 dykes). Weakly modally layered olivine gabbros dominate the exposed parts of the intrusion that has a width of 650 m to 1000 m. Plagioclase (core An68±2) and Ca-rich pyroxene (core Mg no. 79±1) grains are normally zoned, whereas olivine grains (Fo50–65) are homogeneous. Calculated mineral–magma equilibria, based on experimentally determined Mg–Fe magma–olivine and magma–clinopyroxene partition coefficients, suggest that the observed olivine and clinopyroxene compositions in the gabbros cannot have formed from a common parental magma. The unzoned nature of olivine grains and their iron-rich com-positions relative to clinopyroxene suggest post-cumulus Mg–Fe exchange between olivine and interstitial melt. A gabbroic pegmatite is developed in the centre of the intrusion along its entire exposed 5 km strike length. Here, mineral zonation is limited and compositions are similar to rims of cumulus minerals in the enveloping olivine gabbros. The pegmatite could therefore represent interstitial melt mobilized from gabbroic cumulates that later accumulated and crystallized at its present stratigraphic location. Cumulus olivines in the gabbros are close to equilibrium with Ca-rich pyroxene in the pegmatite. This is interpreted as reflecting interstitial melt mobility during the late stages of solidification of the macrodyke. Chilled margins are well preserved at the intrusion margins and are rich in Fe (14–15.3% FeOTOT), Ti (3–3.3% TiO2) and light rare-earth elements ([La/Sm]N = 1.2–1.3), similar to magmas well represented in the overlying sequence of contemporaneous High-Ti Series flood basalts. It is therefore likely that extensive wall-rock melting adjacent to the macrodyke reflects continuous feeding of the overlying flood basalts through the Kraemer Island macrodyke.

A number of sedimentary basins formed within the Tauride–Anatolide Platform of Anatolia during the Late Cretaceous–Tertiary period. Previous studies have proposed different tectonic and evolutionary models for each basin. Geological characteristics of the basins, however, suggest that all these basins are of the same origin and that they followed a similar evolutionary model to one another. Basin development within the Tauride–Anatolide Platform took place in a post-collisional environment following the northward subduction of the northern Neotethys ocean beneath the Pontides. The closure of the northern Neotethys ocean ended with collision of the Tauride–Anatolide Platform with the Pontide volcanic arc and resulted in large bodies of oceanic remnants thrust over the Tauride–Anatolide Platform as ophiolite nappes. Formation of the sedimentary basins followed the emplacement of the ophiolite nappes as they formed as piggy-back basins on top of the underlying thrust ophiolite basement.

The Blackstones Bank, located about 60 km WSW of the Isle of Mull in Western Scotland, is a submarine plutonic complex in the British Tertiary Igneous Province. Geochemical and isotopic analysis of gabbros, microgabbros and basic dykes shows that the magmas interacted strongly with crustal rocks during their emplacement. The isotopic signature of the contaminated Tertiary intrusions shows no evidence of any interaction with Archaean basement, despite the location of the Blackstones complex to the west of the Great Glen fault. Instead, the Blackstones rocks have crustal signatures resembling the Proterozoic basement and cover rocks of western Islay. It is therefore inferred that Early Proterozoic crust extends to the west of the Great Glen fault at this point on the Scottish continental shelf. In addition, the occurrence of similar isotopic signatures in Tertiary igneous rocks east of the Loch Gruinard fault confirms that Early Proterozoic basement extends under the Grampian block of mainland Scotland. When combined with published evidence from the Rockall bank, the new data constrain the location of an Archaean–Proterozoic crustal suture with a WNW trajectory which cuts across the continental shelf of northwest Britain.

Hydrothermal alteration in volcanic arcs occurs in many settings and may involve magmatic, marine, lacustrine or groundwaters, driven by magmatic, tectonic or thermal events. King George Island, part of the South Shetland Island Cenozoic volcanic arc, contains an 80 km long zone of propylitized volcanic rocks, with numerous occurrences of quartz veining, silicic, sericitic, argillic and advanced-argillic alteration. On Barton Peninsula, a basaltic lava sequence (49–44 Ma) intruded by a small, high-level granodiorite pluton (∼42 Ma), contains these alteration types, previously interpreted as a single porphyry-copper system. In this study, we report three, possibly four, distinct fossil hydrothermal episodes. (1) Banded chalcedonic quartz, quartz-sericite and propylitic alteration occurs along ESE faults and as reworked clasts in nearby tuffs. Drusy quartz + calcite veins with silicic/sericitic, argillic and propylitic wallrocks may represent feeders to the near-surface silicification. These characteristics, and anomalous Ag + Pb + Sb + Au plus Te + Se + Zn + As, suggest a neutral-pH geothermal system that was active during volcanism. (2) The lavas and banded-quartz rocks were brecciated, veined and replaced by alunite+native sulphur+pyrite, and pyrophyllite + quartz + pyrite + zunyite + diaspore assemblages with anomalous Hg + Se + As + Bi + Au + Tl + Sb + Cu. Such advanced-argillic alteration is diagnostic of degassing of a felsic magma into shallow (<500 m) meteoric groundwaters. Rhyolite tuffs, previously not reported on King George Island, may represent leakage of this magma to the surface. (3) Subsequent burial to ∼3 km was followed by emplacement of a granodiorite pluton and formation of a silicic contact-metasomatic aureole containing muscovite, biotite, actinolite, magnetite, K-feldspar and tourmaline. Disseminated andalusite + corundum also formed in areas previously affected by the advanced-argillic alteration. Iron/copper-sulphide veinlets are locally abundant, but a porphyry-style geochemical signature is not present. Early Cretaceous Ar–Ar ages near the intrusive contact indicate flow of an excess Ar-bearing hydrothermal plume up the contact. Finally, isolated areas of propylitic alteration in the lavas nearby may be related either to quartz veins of episode 1 at depth or to (4) continued circulation of heated groundwaters around the cooling pluton.
