We report the discovery of Aeronian (Middle Llandovery) graptolites, and corals of probable Devonian age, in boudins hosted by greenschists, within the Southalpine Metamorphic Basement. These discoveries provide key constraints to the depositional age range of the protoliths. This remarkable occurrence of almost undeformed graptolites and compound corals in boudins within a metamorphic shear zone indicates very marked local strain partitioning.

In the Appalachians of mainland Canada and New England, Silurian/Early Devonian rocks are preserved in the Connecticut Valley–Gaspé and Merrimack troughs, and rest unconformably or in fault contact with older rocks belonging to Laurentia and to Gander/Avalon, respectively. The Silurian/Early Devonian rocks consist of marine clastic deposits with subordinate carbonates, lava flows and terrestrial deposits. The origin of these sedimentary basins is still poorly understood. Metamorphic ages and structures in the Laurentian margin, major unconformities and syn-sedimentary normal faulting in both troughs argue for significant crustal extension during deposition. The Connecticut Valley–Gaspé and Merrimack troughs are separated by inliers of pre-Ordovician to Ordovician rocks which we interpret as Silurian basement highs that would have been buried in Devonian times to form a composite sedimentary basin. Volcanic rocks are widely distributed in time and space in both basins, and are mostly subalkaline within-plate tholeiites, which is consistent with a tectonic setting involving crustal extension rather than with subduction. Granitic plutons are abundant in the Merrimack trough and attest to high temperatures at mid-crustal levels. It is suggested that crustal extension was responsible for the formation of both basins and that heating of the lower crust in the Merrimack trough during the Silurian was the result of synorogenic collapse likely triggered by delamination at the Laurentia–Medial New England boundary. Delamination of the subducted slab and the upwelling of the asthenosphere would have caused (1) isostatic uplift and formation of basement highs, (2) magmatism in the lower crust and regional-scale contact metamorphism in the upper crust, and (3) collapse of metamorphic terranes and the formation of subsiding sedimentary basins.

A large rapakivi granite batholith in the Neo-Archaean/Palaeoproterozoic Odesan complex, northeastern Gyeonggi massif, South Korea, has been dated at 1839±10 Ma using SHRIMP U–Pb analysis of zircons. The age, petrological and geochemical characteristics of this batholith are similar to those of the rapakivi granite batholiths exposed in the Rangnim massif of North Korea and in the Miyun–Chengde complex of North China. The country rocks of these rapakivi granite batholiths are also comparable; all are composed of granitic gneisses and banded iron formation (BIF)-bearing supracrustal rocks metamorphosed to amphibolite- to granulite-facies. This study provides new evidence for the suggestion that the Gyeonggi and Rangnim massifs may share an affinity with the Precambrian basement of the North China craton. The study provides new insight into the possible eastward extension of the Sulu orogenic belt in the Korean peninsula and further provides evidence to correlate the Korea basement to a possible global 2.1–1.8 Ga supercontinent.

A cyclic marl–limestone succession of Middle–Late Campanian age has been investigated with respect to a Milankovitch-controlled origin of geochemical data. In general, the major element geochemistry of the marl–limestone rhythmites can be explained by a simple two-component mixing model with the end-members calcium carbonate and ‘average shale’-like material. Carbonate content varies from 55 to 90%. Non-carbonate components are clay minerals (illite, smectite) and biogenic silica from sponge spicules, as well as authigenically formed zeolites (strontian heulandite) and quartz. The redox potential suggests oxidizing conditions throughout the section. Trace element and stable isotopic data as well as SEM investigations show that the carbonate mud is mostly composed of low-magnesium calcitic tests of planktic coccolithophorids and calcareous dinoflagellate cysts (calcispheres). Diagenetic overprint results in a decrease of 2% δ18O and an increase in Mn of up to 250 ppm. However, the sediment seems to preserve most of its high Sr content compared to the primary low-magnesium calcite of co-occurring belemnite rostra. The periodicity of geochemical cycles is dominated by 413 ka and weak signals between 51 and 22.5 ka, attributable to orbital forcing. Accumulation rates within these cycles vary between 40 and 50 m/Ma. The resulting cyclic sedimentary sequence is the product of (a) changes in primary production of low-magnesium calcitic biogenic material in surface waters within the long eccentricity and the precession, demonstrated by the CaCO3 content and the Mg/Al, Mn/Al and Sr/Al ratios, and (b) fluctuations in climate and continental weathering, which changed the quality of supplied clay minerals (the illite/smectite ratio), demonstrated by the K/Al ratio. High carbonate productivity correlates with smectite-favouring weathering (semi-arid conditions, conspicuously dry and moist seasonal changes in warmer climates). Ti as the proxy indicator for the detrital terrigenous influx, as well as Rb, Si, Zr and Na, shows only low frequency signals, indicating nearly constant rates of supply throughout the more or less pure pelagic carbonate deposition of the long-lasting third-order Middle–Upper Campanian sedimentary cycle.

Precise biostratigraphic constraints on the age of the Tal Group are restricted to (1) a basal level correlative with the Anabarites trisulcatus–Protohertzina anabarica Assemblage Zone of southwest China, (2) a level near the boundary of the lower and upper parts of the Tal Group correlative with the early Tsanglangpuan Stage (Drepanuroides Zone), and (3) an interval low in the upper part of the Tal Group correlative with later in the Tsanglangpuan Stage (Palaeolenus Zone). These correlations are based on small shelly fossil and trilobite taxa. Other chronostratigraphic constraints include the marked negative δ13C isotopic excursion coincident with the transition from the Krol Group to the Tal Group. This excursion is used as a proxy for the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary in several sections worldwide and, if applied to the Lesser Himalaya, indicates that the boundary is at or just above the base of the Tal Group. The upper parts of the Tal Group may be of middle or late Cambrian age and might form proximal equivalents of sections in the Zanskar–Spiti region of the Tethyan Himalaya. Both faunal content and lithological succession are comparable to southwest China, furthering recent arguments for close geographic proximity between the Himalaya and the Yangtze block during late Neoproterozoic and early Cambrian time. Trilobites from the uppermost parts of the Sankholi Formation from the Nigali Dhar syncline are described and referred to three taxa, one of which, Drepanopyge gopeni, is a new species. They are the oldest trilobites yet described from the Himalaya.

A detailed field and microstructural investigation of mineral fabrics in the late-Caledonian Galway Granite Batholith (∼400 Ma) provides insights into the relationship between emplacement-related deformation and crystallization state. These relationships are used to infer the regional instantaneous strain pattern at the time of intrusion. A Marginal Deformation Zone occurs in the granite along part of its northern sector, where planar fabrics are contact-parallel and dip steeply to the north. Within the Marginal Deformation Zone, the granite has similar patterns of pre- and post-RCMP (Rheologically Critical Melt Percentage) fabrics on either side of the NNE-trending Shannawona Fault Zone, which separates the Western and Central blocks of the batholith. Oblate pre-RCMP fabrics, which intensify towards the contact, are overprinted in a down-temperature continuum of deformation by co-axial post-RCMP fabrics that also become more intense towards the contact. At the southern edge of the Marginal Deformation Zone, deformation ceased before the granite reached its RCMP whereas, close to the contact, deformation ceased at ∼500°C. Within the Central Block, oblate fabrics also developed parallel with internal granite facies boundaries. Throughout the batholith, the fabrics formed by co-axial deformation as a result of lateral expansion operating in successive magma batches at the emplacement level. These intrusion-related fabrics are consistent with other evidence that indicates the Galway Granite was emplaced into a transtensional setting at the end of the Caledonian Orogeny.

Small theropod post-cranial material from Tendaguru, Tanzania, the only known Late Jurassic theropod locality in the Southern Hemisphere, is reviewed. Material originally described as ‘coelurosaurs’ includes at least one taxon of basal tetanuran and one taxon of small abelisauroid. Together with the abelisauroid Elaphrosaurus and the presence of a larger ceratosaur in Tendaguru, this material indicates that ceratosaurs were an important faunal element of Late Jurassic East African theropod faunas. One bone furthermore shares derived characters with the holotype of the poorly known Middle Jurassic Australian theropod Ozraptor and allows the identification of the latter as the oldest known abelisauroid, thus indicating an early divergence of ceratosaurids and abelisauroids within ceratosaurs. Abelisauroids might have originated in Gondwana and represent important faunal elements of Cretaceous Gondwanan theropod faunas in general.

Mesoproterozoic supracrustal rocks in the Kibaride belt (southeast Congo) were intruded by mafic–intermediate plutonic rocks. These igneous rocks were affected by greenschist- to amphibolite-facies metamorphism during the Mesoproterozoic Kibaran orogenesis. U–Pb single zircon dating of the Mitwaba mafic–intermediate plutonic rocks yields an emplacement age of 1.38 Ga. The compositions of the Mitwaba mafic–intermediate plutonic rocks range from gabbro to diorite and show the following elemental concentrations: SiO2: 49–58 wt%, TiO2: 0.53–0.92 wt%, A2O3: 13.1–18.68 wt%, Zr: 45–142 ppm, Y: 13–43 ppm. Mg no. 40–66 indicates variable degrees of fractionation of the magmas. The rocks are marked by high and variable Th/Ta (3–14), La/Nb (2–5) and low Ce/Pb (0.3–12.8) and Ti/V (10–19). Chondrite-normalized REE patterns exhibit enrichment in LREE relative to HREE ((La/Yb)N=2.9–5.8). Primordial mantle-normalized spider diagrams show negative slopes with gradual decrease from LIL to HFS elements and are marked by Nb and Ti negative anomalies. Immobile trace-element contents indicate a continental arc setting for these mafic–intermediate igneous rocks. They are inferred to have originated from a mantle wedge enriched by fluid from a subducting slab, with possibly an additional contribution from subducted sediments. Low, sub-chondritic Nb/Ta ratios in these mafic rocks support this interpretation. A model involving underplating of mafic–intermediate arc magma into the crust, triggering partial melting of Mitwaba group metasedimentary rocks during the accretionary stage of the Kibaran orogeny, is proposed to explain the coeval emplacement of mafic–intermediate arc magmas and peraluminous S-type granitoids in the Kibaride belt of central Africa.
