It has been shown that diorite tongues invading limestone have given rise to a series of contaminated rocks in which definite mineral assemblages may be recognized. These assemblages are sharply defined and occur in rude concentric arrangement about the tongues.

CYATHAXONIA siluriensis M’Coy is a small and rather rare rugose coral, which persists from the Woolhope Limestone to the Upper Ludlow. It is here placed as the genotype of Syringaxon Lindström, and an account is given of its structure and development.

The general results which have accrued from this investigation may be summarized as follows: the shaly type of Liassic sedimentation with much pyrite, indicating a quiet sea with abundant sulphur compounds, gradually gave place to a regular and at first fairly steady shallowing of the water with, somewhat later, occasional incursions of strong currents bringing pebbles and broken fossils from an area undergoing active erosion. At the same time the amount of iron introduced, both in solution and in the form of derived ooliths, increased steadily, culminating in the siliceous oolite of the Dogger, which is essentially similar to the rocks composing this formation to the west and north-west.

IN 1917 Professor E. S. Moore, of the School of Mines, Chicago, U.S.A., kindly sent me a photograph together with this note: “I am sending you a photograph of something which may illustrate your bubbles on the australites. Mr. Dudley of the Metallurgy Department was working with a small crucible containing slags and by accident a drop of water fell on the surface, with the result that a bubble was developed, such as you see in the photograph. The photograph is not a very good one; but it will show you what I mean.

SOME years ago, hard limestones containing corals were discovered cropping out in the railway cutting at Km. 65 near Tulkarem. These contain various coral types, but it was found impossible to determine their age. Since that time, reef limestones with abundant calcareous algae (Lithothamnium) and Hydrocorallines of the Millepora group have been found in various localities and are the first Miocene rocks to be recorded from Palestine.
