Global sea-level fluctuated markedly during the early Silurian, probably as a result of the waxing and waning of ice-sheets in the South American portion of Gondwana. The highest sea-levels of the Silurian are recorded by the Telychian upper crispus–lower griestoniensis and spiralis–lower lapworthi biozones. Other highstands occurred in the early Aeronian, during the convolutus Zone (mid Aeronian), guerichi Zone and late turriculatus Zone (early Telychian), and early Sheinwoodian. Low sea-levels characterized much of the argenteus and sedgwickii zones (Aeronian), the utilis Subzone (late guerichi–early turriculatus zones, early Telychian), the late Telychian (commencing in the mid lapworthi Zone) and, after a period of apparently only small amplitude sea-level fluctuations in the late Sheinwoodian and earliest Homerian, the mid–late Homerian, in particular the early nassa Zone. Facies (and faunal) changes in the Lower Silurian do not support the P and S model of Jeppsson and others, but are consistent with the sea-level changes proposed herein. Mid Telychian marine red beds appear to have been deposited during a minor sea-level fall immediately after a period of very high sea-levels, rather than during a transgressive episode as previously suggested. Comparison of the sea-level curve presented herein with those constructed in the past is hampered by the lack of precision currently possible in the correlation of early Silurian deep water (graptolitic) and shallow water (shelly) sequences. Improving the precision of this correlation should be a priority for future research.

Siberia contains several key reference sections for studies of biological and environmental evolution across the Proterozoic–Phanerozoic transition. The Platonovskaya Formation, exposed in the Turukhansk region of western Siberia, is an uppermost Proterozoic to Cambrian succession whose trace and body fossils place broad limits on the age of deposition, but do not permit detailed correlation with boundary successions elsewhere. In contrast, a striking negative carbon isotopic excursion in the lower part of the Platonovskaya Formation permits precise chemostratigraphic correlation with uppermost Yudomian successions in Siberia, and possibly worldwide. In addition to providing a tool for correlation, the isotopic excursion preserved in the Platonovskaya and contemporaneous successions documents a major biogeochemical event, likely involving the world ocean. The excursion coincides with the palaeontological breakpoint between Ediacaran- and Cambrian-style assemblages, suggesting a role for biogeochemical change in evolutionary events near the Proterozoic–Cambrian boundary.

New field, petrographic, geochemical and Rb–Sr/Sm–Nd isotope data are presented from early mafic dykes which intrude the Mesoproterozoic Cape Meredith Complex, West Falkland. The dykes, which have been previously regarded as being Ordovician in age, are seen in the field to cut a suite of lamprophyre sheets. New K–Ar data from biotite separates from two lamprophyres suggest a miminum age of emplacement of ∼520 Ma, confirming previous work. The Rb–Sr and Sm–Nd analyses of the pre-lamprophyre mafic dykes suggests that they were probably intruded during the late Neoproterozoic at ∼600 Ma. This new data has considerable implications for the previously published estimates of the longevity of intracontinental extension events in this part of Gondwana.

Lower Cambrian sediments from the Withycombe Farm borehole (Oxfordshire) yield isolated halkieriid sclerites. All bear prominent ridges, and most appear to be either cultrates or palmates, although distinction between the two in the available material is generally difficult. Two other sclerites are more elongate: one may represent a spinose sclerite, while the other is possibly derived from the siculate zone of the original scleritome. Adjacent horizons of the Withycombe Formation yield disc-like fossils, superficially similar to hyolith opercula or monoplacophorans. These are tentatively identified as deriving from the same halkieriid scleritome. Two main types are identified, and these may correspond to the anterior and posterior shells of Halkieria evangelista from the lower Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna of North Greenland. The age of the Withycombe Formation within the Cambrian is not entirely resolved, but faunal evidence suggests an equivalence to the Cuslett Formation of southeast Newfoundland, which corresponds to either the upper Tommotian or lower Atdabanian of the standard Siberian section.

A sheeted dolerite dyke swarm has been discovered at Duniewick Fort, Ballantrae. It forms part of the Early Ordovician Ballantrae Complex of Ayrshire, southwest Scotland. Asymmetric chilled margins, parallel to sub-parallel dykes and multiple dykes (dykes within dykes) are found. Although the mineralogy has been altered by metamorphism, the geochemistry is comparable with modern day back-arc marginal basin basalt. Cross-cutting sills have the chemistry of within-plate basalt. The regional geological setting suggests that an ophiolite sequence has been dismembered and incorporated into a serpentinite mélange. This is the first description of a 100% sheeted dyke complex (senso stricto) from the Ballantrae ophiolite.

The northern, James Ross Island region of the Larsen Basin, on the eastern, back-arc margin of the Antarctic Peninsula magmatic arc, includes one of the thickest and most complete Upper Cretaceous sedimentary successions exposed in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the southern part of the basin remains poorly known, mainly owing to inaccessibility and lack of exposure. Table Nunatak, an isolated, 1-km-long, 400-m-wide outcrop at the tip of Kenyon Peninsula, is the only known exposure of Upper Cretaceous or younger strata in this region. The 62-m-thick succession exposed there is assigned to the newly defined Table Nunatak Formation. It consists mainly of sharp-based, amalgamated beds of fine-grained sandstone up to 2.8 m thick, with subordinate intervals of intensely bioturbated mudstone. Wave ripples are present at some levels, and locally developed swaley cross-stratification provides evidence for storm-generated combined-flow deposition. However, most sandstone beds appear to be internally structureless apart from normal grading, and are interpreted as the direct suspension deposits of highly sediment-charged storm- and/or flood-related flows. The succession represents relatively nearshore deposition, probably at the mouth of a river or deltaic distributary channel. Charcoalified plant debris, abundant at the tops of some sandstone beds, suggests a periodically wildfire-swept hinterland forested largely by coniferous trees. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages indicate a late Santonian age, and suggest correlation with the basal part of the Lachman Crags Member of the Santa Marta Formation (Marambio Group) on James Ross Island. Palaeocurrents, sandstone petrography and the high sediment supply rate proposed for the Table Nunatak Formation, suggest a relatively high-relief source area to the west, with large-scale erosion of granitoid plutons and metamorphic rocks, possibly related to arc uplift during a mid-Cretaceous compressional episode. The formation is evidence of a major southward extension of the Upper Cretaceous strata exposed in the northern Larsen Basin, and suggests lateral continuity of shallow-marine deposition for at least 500–600 km along the Weddell Sea margin of the Antarctic Peninsula in Santonian times.

Sedimentary organic matter deriving from tubes of sabelliditids, vendotaenids, sapropelic films and kerogens was extracted by acid processing from Upper Vendian siliciclastic successions in the East European Platform. Elemental composition obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) displays the increasing cobalt (Co) concentration from 1 ppm at the bottom of Upper Vendian succession to about 800 ppm in the uppermost part near the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. This distribution is recorded in all studied successions and is not related to resistant minerals that survived acid treatment. The enrichment in Co and other metals in the sedimentary organic matter is inferred to be caused by the bloom of cyanobacterial microbiota, and bonding of metals in decaying sedimentary organic matter during pre-burial bacterial reworking and post-burial early diagenesis in a low energy, stagnant depositional basin during Kotlin times. The positive Ceanom in probable benthic sabelliditids, and the exceptional preservation of sedimentary organic matter from Kotlinian strata, indicate the anaerobic conditions during their sedimentation. Clear correlations between 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C and Co imply the secondary isotopic signatures of Sr and C in sedimentary organic matter deriving from a restricted epicontinental marine basin.

The environmental setting and taphonomy of the insect fauna of the Insect Bed, Bembridge Marls (late Eocene; 36 Ma) of the Isle of Wight is described. Cluster analysis of taxonomic data on the insect fauna of a diversity of modern tropical environments, together with that of the Bembridge Marls, shows that the insects of the latter are characteristic of a primary sub-tropical/tropical forest subject to significant seasonal rainfall. A similar approach indicates that the sample of taxa preserved in the Insect Bed is biased toward insects from leaf litter and lower herbage microhabitats. External ornamentation of the cuticle is preserved on a micron scale, and the individual microfibrils of the procuticle can be distinguished. The insects of the Bembridge Marls are remarkable in preserving cuticle and mineralized internal tissues in a largely uncompacted state. Chemical analysis (py-GC/MS) reveals that the cuticle is composed of an aliphatic polymer, possibly due to polymerization of cuticular waxes during diagenesis. No chitin was detected. The soft tissues, which include sarcolemma and muscle fibres, are preserved through replacement in calcite.

The Guadix Basin became established as an intramontane basin in the central sector of the Betic Cordillera at the beginning of Late Miocene time. Its geodynamic evolution starts with a unit of Tortonian marine sediments and is completed by a unit of Late Turolian–Pleistocene continental sediments. In the two units, six depositional sequences have been differentiated whose boundaries, in most cases, coincide with tectonic events. Geohistorical diagrams show the results of quantitative analyses of subsidence in the northern sector of the basin and permit correlation of the main events with significant changes in the history of subsidence and uplift. A period of strong subsidence occurred at the beginning of Tortonian time causing the formation of a marine basin 800 m deep. The mid- and end-Tortonian tectonic events involved periods of uplift leading to shallowing in the basin. After continentalization at the end of the Tortonian, the basin was uplifted continuously from Late Turolian to Late Pleistocene times, finally accumulating sediments at a height of 1000 m.

As a contribution to the current debate on the age of the Grampian Orogeny in the Scottish Dalradian, we comment on the valuable paper by Tanner (1995) that establishes stratigraphical continuity between the ‘Dalradian’ Ben Ledi Formation and the ‘Highland Border’ Keltie Water Formation that contains the Lower Cambrian Leny Limestone (Cowie, Rushton & Stubblefield, 1972, p. 17). Tanner's interpretation of the stratigraphy differs in detail from that of Harris & Fettes (1972). We unreservedly accept Tanner's mapping and the stratigraphical changes that follow from it: there are two units of black slate and limestone; that containing the fossiliferous limestone of Leny Old Quarry is the younger.
