Published online by Cambridge University Press:  01 May 2009

Extract

The true test of the classification adopted for European sedimentary formations is to endeavour to apply it in distant parts of the earth. It will then be seen whether the classification in question is real, or whether it is founded on local and accidental peculiarities of the rocks in a particular region.

page 319 note 1 It will be found that the views here expressed have much resemblance to those of Professor Dana (Manual of Geology, 1863, p. 125) and of Professor Renevier (Bul. Soc. Vaud. Sc. Nat. xiii. pp. 229, etc.) It should therefore be stated that the paragraphs as. they stand above had been written before either of the works named were consulted.
