Abstract

We present measurements of the fine structure transitions ofatomic carbon, and of the submillimeter rotational lines of carbon monoxidein a variety of external galaxies. We discuss the relativecontributions of atomic carbon and carbon monoxide for the coolingof molecular gas in these galaxies, and how these linescan be used to determine the physical conditions in theemitting gas.
