Any author accepted in Environmental Data Science (EDS) can publish their work on an open-access basis irrespective of their funding situation or their institution.
Cambridge University Press is committed to transitioning to a fully open-access model for its journal publishing and believes that no author should be left behind in this open future.
Authors are covered in the following ways in EDS and other open-access journals at Cambridge:
- Most authors have publishing costs covered through the Transformative Agreements that Cambridge has formed with consortia and institutions worldwide. If the corresponding author is affiliated with an institution with a Transformative Agreement, the article will be processed through that agreement and this generally happens automatically as a consequence of our workflows.
- Authors who are not covered by a Transformative Agreement but have access to funding that can be used to cover publishing costs are expected to pay an article processing charge. We recognise that a minority of authors are in this situation.
- Any author without access to a Transformative Agreement or funding to pay an article processing charge can still publish on an open-access basis in EDS. Some authors may be covered by the Cambridge Open Equity Initiative, which promotes open-access publishing in the developing world. But no matter where in the world they are located, any author without funding can obtain a waiver to the article processing charge. After acceptance in EDS, authors are provided with a link to a waiver form that they can complete if they need this support, leading to provision of a code that waives the charge completely. There is no means-testing or interrogation; waivers are granted without condition.
