Shigaku zasshi 106.5 (1997), 193–205. The summary of “Shang, Western Zhou, Springs and Autumns” scholarship is by Shibata Noboru; the summary of “Warring States, Qin, and Han” scholarship is by Kojima Shigetoshi. The translator wishes to thank Tomiya Itaru , Miyake Kiyoshi , Satō Tatsurō , and especially Yoneda Kenjirō as well as the staff of Kyoto University Library for locating materials and providing solutions on tricky terms and names.

References

1. In the translation, Shang is used regularly in place of Yin in the original Japanese, reflecting different conventions in Japanese and Western usage. The term Yinxu (ruins of Yin) is retained, however, because this is the proper name of a site at Anyang, where the last Shang capital was situated. Where “Shang, Zhou, and Springs and Autumns” are enumerated in the original, “Zhou” has been translated as “Western Zhou.”

Subject headings have been added by the translator for the convenience of the Western reader. In a very few instances I have also made minor additions to the original, where I thought it necessary to ensure the Western reader's understanding. These additions are indicated by square brackets. Parentheses are used for additions originating with the authors or for translations of Chinese terms cited.
