In order to explain the behavior of a human organism, it is necessary to take its environment into consideration. Except for very severe psychotic withdrawal, this has been recognized as a near triviality since Aristotle. But although consideration of the environment may be necessary, it is not sufficient, and it is now generally conceded that a man's behavior cannot be explained solely from a consideration of his present environment and a history of his responses to past environments.

The notion of trying is vital to any theory of action. You could hardly analyse much of what people do without mentioning their efforts, successful and unsuccessful. A man's desires and decisions find expression in his attempts. What you are trying to do is also a prime example of what you know without benefit of evidence and observation. It might seem that little attention has been devoted to this central concept because it is philosophically trouble-free. Isn't trying simply exerting yourself—mentally or physically—as a means of bringing about some result you want? And just as you can think of anything under the sun, can't you try to do anything at all? These and similar natural views of trying call forth a swarm of minor, but challenging problems. To begin with, there are at least three relevant species of trying besides the pre-eminent cause-effect or meansends type. I won't take time to belabor the suggestion that trying is merely bracing yourself inwardly, while manifesting your subcutaneous capers through your behavior. But this quaint hypothesis does raise problems. Is trying just doing something? To what extent is it constituted by the agent's intentions and beliefs? As for what a person can try to do, a random survey indicates that there are unsuspected limits. It sounds absurd to describe a person as attempting to choke, to misplace something, to feel pain, to get annoyed or discouraged.

Dans une récente étude, Émile Gosselin a montré que près du quart des familles de Montréal, gagnant moins de 3,300 dollars par an, vivent dans la pauvreté. Il a indiqué ensuite que si l'on ajoutait à cette population celle qui ne dispose que de 4,000 dollars et qu'il qualifie de familles vivant dans la privation, on atteint le tiers des familles et personnes seules de Montréal. Enfin s'ajoutent à cette masse ceux dont il dit qu'ils vivent dans une situation précaire, sans réserve permettant d'affronter une perte d'emploi, une récession ou un accident personnel.

A un colloque organisé par le Conseil du Bien-Étre du Québec, à l'automne 1965, M. Jacques Dofny déclarait: « la lutte contre la pauvrete» ne peut se gagner par l'argent » et, par suite, « déclarer la guerre à la pauvreteé, ce n'est pas distribuer de l'argent, même si c'est l'état qui le distribue » (Le Devoir, mercredi, 8 septembre 1965). Par contre, il y a quelques jours, M. John Fryer, du Congrés Canadien du Travail, affirmait que le pauvre « a besoin d'argent, non de sermons » (The Ottawa Citizen, mars 1966). Ces deux positions représentent sans doute, les extrêmes de l'éventail du présent débat sur la pauvrete». Mais pour s'y inscrire avec lumiére, il faut commencer par inventorier, même sommairement, les principales catégories de solutions proposécs. Je veux done premiérement examiner les disproportions entre les limites de ces solutions et l'ampleur du probléme. Je noterai les déficiences de la charité privée et organisée, de l'assistance publique, des assurances sociales et enfin de la redistribution du revenu pour faire ressortir, en deuxiéme lieu, ce qui m'apparaît être les conditions essentielles de la stratégic de la guerre à la pauvreté.

Nous nous proposons de faire une brève réflexion morale sur la pauvreté ou plus exactement sur l'homme pauvre. Prenons pour point de départ la définition de la pauvreté formulée par M. Dofny à Lévis et publiée par le Devoir du 8 septembre 1965. La pauvreté est l'ćtat de privation des biens nécessaires à la subsistance et au développement des individus et des groupes à une époque donnée. Je crois que c'est lá une bonne definition. J'aimerais cependant, expliciter ce qui y est inclus, c'est-à-dire la privation des biens nécessaires aux individus, aux families et aux autres groupes. Ce n'est qu'une question d'accent, car je suis convaincu que pour les individus, et pour les groupements autres que la famille, y compris la nation et l'État, la famille est d'une importance fondamentale.

What are the implications of total dependence? What is involved in saying that one thing depends entirely upon another? What can be said in respect to cases of total dependence, and what can not be said?

In Chapter II of his work The Philosophy of Spinoza, Wolfson accepts Descartes' distinction between the geometrical method of philosophizing and the geometrical form of literary exposition. The geometrical method of philosophizing is a method of demonstration and is essentially identical with “valid syllogistic reasoning as practised throughout the history of philosophy.” The geometrical form of literary exposition is one modelled after the literary form of Euclid's Elements. Wolfson proceeds to present two theses which serve as the premises of a conclusion respecting the relation between form and content in Spinoza's Ethics. The first thesis is that as a consequence of Spinoza's “mathematical way of looking at things” the geometrical method “is adopted by Spinoza and used consistently in his discussions of metaphysical matters throughout his chief philosophic work.” The second thesis is to the effect that there is no logical connection between the geometrical method of philosophizing and the geometrical literary form of exposition, i.e., a geometrizing philosopher, e.g., Descartes, need not employ the geometrical literary form. From these theses, serving as premises, Wolfson concludes that “there is no logical connection between the substance of Spinoza's philosophy and the form in which it is written” and, hence, “his choice of the Euclidian geometrical form is to be explained on other grounds.” Wolfson proceeds to present four possible reasons which, either individually or conjointly, may lie behind Spinoza's employment of the geometrical literary form: (1) on pedagogical grounds, (2) in reaction against certain literary forms which had developed since the Renaissance, (3) to avoid arguing against his opponents, and (4) for the sake of novelty.

Depuis ses premiers écrits, qui datent de 1913, jusqu'à ses derniers écrits publiés, qui datent d'environ 1949, le principal souci de Wittgenstein a été le rapport entre signes, symboles, mots, propositions … d'un c⊚té, et, de l'autre, le réel, le monde, ce-quien- est … qui est exprimé par ces signes, symboles, mots, propositions. Cependant, durant cette longue période il y a eu une dichotomie, un clivage, dans la pensée de Wittgenstein, clivage tel que l'on a même parlé d'un « premier » Wittgenstein et d'un « second » Wittgenstein. En fait, il s'agit peut-être moins d'un clivage que de l'abandon, durant la seconde période, d'une présupposition métaphysique, abandon qui a donné lieu à une tentative, de la part de Wittgenstein, de reformuler sa pensée indépendamment de cette présupposition. Au centre du Tractatus se trouve la présupposition que « la logique remplit le monde », que la structure du monde est fondamentalement une question de logique, et que la nature essentielle de la pensée est également une question de logique: il nous est impossible, écrit Wittgenstein, de penser de manière illogique.
