Not only peasants: the myth of continuity in the irrigation communities of Valencia, Spain, in the medieval and early modern periods

Abstract
The Horta of Valencia is a large irrigated area managed by eight communities of landowners. Traditionally, it was considered that these communities were composed of peasants, that they were self-managed and self-governed, and that they had remained immutable over time. However, the historical evidence shows that this is not true for pre-modern times. This article examines a possible Islamic origin of these institutions, the rupture caused by the Christian conquest of Valencia in the thirteenth century, the structure of the communities, and the social diversity of their members within the framework of feudalism. We conclude that irrigation communities cannot be used as examples of institutional continuity or of self-regulated and autonomous social organisations.

L’Horta de Valence est une grande zone irriguée gérée par huit communautés de propriétaires fonciers. Traditionnellement, on considérait que ces communautés étaient composées de paysans, qu'elles étaient autogérées et indépendantes, et qu'elles étaient restées immobiles au fil du temps. Les sources historiques montrent cependant que cela n'est pas vrai pour l’époque moderne. Les auteurs étudient la possible origine islamique de ces institutions, la rupture provoquée par la conquête chrétienne de Valence au XIIIe siècle, la structure de ces communautés et la diversité sociale de leurs membres dans ce qui était un cadre féodal. Ils en concluent que les communautés d'irrigants ne peuvent pas servir d'exemples de continuité institutionnelle ni de modèles d'organisations sociales autorégulées et autonomes.
Nicht nur bauern: der kontinuitätsmythos in den bewässerungsgemeinden in valencia im mittelalter und in der frühen neuzeit
Die Horta von Valencia ist ein großes bewässertes Gebiet, das von acht Landbesitzergemeinden unterhalten wird. Früher nahm man an, dass diese Gemeinden aus selbständigen und eigenverantwortlichen Bauern bestanden und im Laufe der Zeit unverändert geblieben waren. Der historische Befund zeigt jedoch, dass dies für vormoderne Zeiten nicht zutreffend ist. Der Beitrag untersucht den möglicherweise islamischen Ursprung dieser Einrichtungen, den durch die christliche Eroberung Valencias im 13. Jahrhundert verursachten Bruch, die Struktur der Gemeinden und die soziale Vielschichtigkeit ihrer Mitglieder im Rahmen des Feudalismus. Wir kommen zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Bewässerungsgemeinden nicht als Beispiel für institutionelle Kontinuität oder für selbstverwaltete und autonome soziale Organisationen gelten können.

30 There is evidence to suggest that there were more cases, particularly in suburban areas. In the royal town of Borriana, for example, two irrigation systems and two communities existed throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. These systems merged in the early fifteenth century, but due to the lack of local documents, we know little about the way they operated and their degree of autonomy from the municipal government. In the town of Alzira, which was also a royal jurisdiction, the construction of the Royal Canal, in the mid-thirteenth century, made use of the Andalusi irrigation system located to the south of the Xúquer River, the Canal of Escalona.
