8 The authors gratefully acknowledge a grant from S.S.R.C. which made computer analysis of these returns possible. Since there are data available on over 29,000 individuals (including non-resident family members and individuals who had died between 1841 and 1851) and up to 20 pieces of information are recorded for each individual, hand sorting seemed impracticable. A FIND-2 data-management system running on an ICL computer was therefore used to store all the records and carry out initial sorting into age groups, occupation groups etc. Supplementary statistical analysis was carried out using a microcomputer.

18 Information on the size and value of individual land holdings in the parishes covered by the census data can be obtained from: General valuation of rateable property in Ireland (Dublin, 1861)Google Scholar. The data relate to the late 1850s and so can be correlated quite closely with the census material. The valuation (often known as the Griffith valuation) is organised by Poor Law Union and the relevant sections are: Parish of Ballinderry -Union of Lisburn 99–115 and Union of Lurgan 22–26; Parishes of Carncastle, Grange of Killyglen, Kilwaughter and Larne - Union of Larne 39–62; Parishes of Dunaghy, Craigs and Rasharkin - Union of Ballymena 145–61 and 171–88; Parish of Ballymoney - Union of Ballymoney 1–2; Parish of Killead - Union of Antrim 69–91; Parish of Aghalee - Union of Lurgan 1–7; Parish of Aghagallon - Union of Lurgan 7–22.
