In majority bootstrap percolation on a graph G, an infection spreads according to the following deterministic rule: if at least half of the neighbours of a vertex v are already infected, then v is also infected, and infected vertices remain infected forever. We say that percolation occurs if eventually every vertex is infected.

The elements of the set of initially infected vertices, A ⊂ V(G), are normally chosen independently at random, each with probability p, say. This process has been extensively studied on the sequence of torus graphs [n]d, for n = 1,2, . . ., where d = d(n) is either fixed or a very slowly growing function of n. For example, Cerf and Manzo [17] showed that the critical probability is o(1) if d(n) ≤ log*n, i.e., if p = p(n) is bounded away from zero then the probability of percolation on [n]d tends to one as n → ∞.

In this paper we study the case when the growth of d to ∞ is not excessively slow; in particular, we show that the critical probability is 1/2 + o(1) if d ≥ (log log n)2 log log log n, and give much stronger bounds in the case that G is the hypercube, [2]d.

A string graph is the intersection graph of a collection of continuous arcs in the plane. We show that any string graph with m edges can be separated into two parts of roughly equal size by the removal of vertices. This result is then used to deduce that every string graph with n vertices and no complete bipartite subgraph Kt,t has at most ctn edges, where ct is a constant depending only on t. Another application shows that locally tree-like string graphs are globally tree-like: for any ε > 0, there is an integer g(ε) such that every string graph with n vertices and girth at least g(ε) has at most (1 + ε)n edges. Furthermore, the number of such labelled graphs is at most (1 + ε)nT(n), where T(n) = nn−2 is the number of labelled trees on n vertices.

A set of reals A = {a1,. . .,an} is called convex if ai+1 − ai > ai − ai−1 for all i. We prove, among other results, that for some c > 0 every convex A satisfies |A−A| ≥ c|A|8/5log−2/5|A|.

We give several results showing that different discrete structures typically gain certain spanning substructures (in particular, Hamilton cycles) after a modest random perturbation. First, we prove that adding linearly many random edges to a dense k-uniform hypergraph ensures the (asymptotically almost sure) existence of a perfect matching or a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof involves an interesting application of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, which might be independently useful. We next prove that digraphs with certain strong expansion properties are pancyclic, and use this to show that adding a linear number of random edges typically makes a dense digraph pancyclic. Finally, we prove that perturbing a certain (minimum-degree-dependent) number of random edges in a tournament typically ensures the existence of multiple edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. All our results are tight.

A finite or infinite matrix A with rational entries is called partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is a monochromatic vector x with . Many of the classical theorems of Ramsey Theory may naturally be interpreted as assertions that particular matrices are partition regular.

While in the finite case partition regularity is well understood, very little is known in the infinite case. Our aim in this paper is to present some of the natural and appealing open problems in the area.

We prove the existence of an asymptotic expansion in the inverse dimension, to all orders, for the connective constant for self-avoiding walks on ℤd. For the critical point, defined as the reciprocal of the connective constant, the coefficients of the expansion are computed through order d−6, with a rigorous error bound of order d−7 Our method for computing terms in the expansion also applies to percolation, and for nearest-neighbour independent Bernoulli bond percolation on ℤd gives the 1/d-expansion for the critical point through order d−3, with a rigorous error bound of order d−4 The method uses the lace expansion.

Answering a question raised by Dudek and Prałat, we show that if pn → ∞, w.h.p., whenever G = G(n, p) is 2-edge-coloured there is a monochromatic path of length (2/3 + o(1))n. This result is optimal in the sense that 2/3 cannot be replaced by a larger constant.

As part of the proof we obtain the following result. Given a graph G on n vertices with at least $(1-\varepsilon)\binom{n}{2}$ edges, whenever G is 2-edge-coloured, there is a monochromatic path of length at least $(2/3 - 110\sqrt{\varepsilon})n$. This is an extension of the classical result by Gerencsér and Gyárfás which says that whenever Kn is 2-coloured there is a monochromatic path of length at least 2n/3.

It is shown that if n>n0(d) then any d-regular graph G=(V, E) on n vertices contains a set of u=[lfloor ]n/2[rfloor ] vertices which is joined by at most (d/2−c√d)u edges to the rest of the graph, where c>0 is some absolute constant. This is tight, up to the value of c.

This work deals with convergence theorems and bounds on the cost of several layout measures for lattice graphs, random lattice graphs and sparse random geometric graphs. Specifically, we consider the following problems: Minimum Linear Arrangement, Cutwidth, Sum Cut, Vertex Separation, Edge Bisection and Vertex Bisection. For full square lattices, we give optimal layouts for the problems still open. For arbitrary lattice graphs, we present best possible bounds disregarding a constant factor. We apply percolation theory to the study of lattice graphs in a probabilistic setting. In particular, we deal with the subcritical regime that this class of graphs exhibits and characterize the behaviour of several layout measures in this space of probability. We extend the results on random lattice graphs to random geometric graphs, which are graphs whose nodes are spread at random in the unit square and whose edges connect pairs of points which are within a given distance. We also characterize the behaviour of several layout measures on random geometric graphs in their subcritical regime. Our main results are convergence theorems that can be viewed as an analogue of the Beardwood, Halton and Hammersley theorem for the Euclidean TSP on random points in the unit square.

We first describe a reduction from the problem of lower-bounding the number of distinct distances determined by a set S of s points in the plane to an incidence problem between points and a certain class of helices (or parabolas) in three dimensions. We offer conjectures involving the new set-up, but are still unable to fully resolve them.

Instead, we adapt the recent new algebraic analysis technique of Guth and Katz [9], as further developed by Elekes, Kaplan and Sharir [6], to obtain sharp bounds on the number of incidences between these helices or parabolas and points in ℝ3. Applying these bounds, we obtain, among several other results, the upper bound O(s3) on the number of rotations (rigid motions) which map (at least) three points of S to three other points of S. In fact, we show that the number of such rotations which map at least k ≥ 3 points of S to k other points of S is close to O(s3/k12/7).

One of our unresolved conjectures is that this number is O(s3/k2), for k ≥ 2. If true, it would imply the lower bound Ω(s/logs) on the number of distinct distances in the plane.

The size-Ramsey number $\^{r} $(F) of a graph F is the smallest integer m such that there exists a graph G on m edges with the property that every colouring of the edges of G with two colours yields a monochromatic copy of F. In 1983, Beck provided a beautiful argument that shows that $\^{r} $(Pn) is linear, solving a problem of Erdős. In this note, we provide another proof of this fact that actually gives a better bound, namely, $\^{r} $(Pn) < 137n for n sufficiently large.

We give a concentration inequality involving a family of independent random permutations, which is useful for analysing certain randomized methods for graph colouring.

Let f(t) be the largest integer such that every graph with average degree t has a topological clique with f(i) vertices. It is widely believed that . Here we prove the weaker estimate .

The cover time, C, for a simple random walk on a realization, GN, of [Gscr ](N, p), the random graph on N vertices where each two vertices have an edge between them with probability p independently, is studied. The parameter p is allowed to decrease with N and p is written on the form f(N)/N, where it is assumed that f(N)[ges ]c log N for some c>1 to asymptotically ensure connectedness of the graph. It is shown that if f(N) is of higher order than log N, then, with probability 1−o(1), (1−ε)N log N[les ]E[C[mid ]GN] [les ](1+ε)N log N for any fixed ε>0, whereas if f(N)=O(log N), there exists a constant a>0 such that, with probability 1−o(1), E[C[mid ]GN] [ges ](1+a)N log N. It is furthermore shown that if f(N) is of higher order than (log N)3 then Var(C[mid ]GN)= o((N log N)2) with probability 1−o(1), so that with probability 1−o(1), the stronger statement that (1−ε)N log N[les ]C[les ](1+ε)N log N holds.

We continue the study of regular partitions of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain corresponding counting lemmas for the regularity lemmas for hypergraphs from our paper ‘Regular Partitions of Hypergraphs: Regularity Lemmas’ (in this issue).

The lamplighter group over $\Z$ is the wreath product $\Z_q \wr \Z$. With respect to a natural generating set, its Cayley graph is the Diestel–Leader graph $\mbox{\sl DL}(q,q)$. We study harmonic functions for the ‘simple’ Laplacian on this graph and, more generally, for a class of random walks on $\mbox{\sl DL}(q,r)$, where $q,r \geq 2$. The $\mbox{\sl DL}$-graphs are horocyclic products of two trees, and we give a full description of all positive harmonic functions in terms of the boundaries of these two trees. In particular, we determine the minimal Martin boundary, that is, the set of minimal positive harmonic functions.

Total path length, or search cost, for a rooted tree is defined as the sum of all root-to-node distances. Let Tn be the total path length for a random recursive tree of order n. Mahmoud [10] showed that Wn := (Tn − E[Tn])/n converges almost surely and in L2 to a nondegenerate limiting random variable W. Here we give recurrence relations for the moments of Wn and of W and show that Wn converges to W in Lp for each 0 < p < ∞. We confirm the conjecture that the distribution of W is not normal. We also show that the distribution of W is characterized among all distributions having zero mean and finite variance by the distributional identity

For a finite multigraph G, the reliability function of G is the probability RG(q) that if each edge of G is deleted independently with probability q then the remaining edges of G induce a connected spanning subgraph of G; this is a polynomial function of q. In 1992, Brown and Colbourn conjectured that, for any connected multigraph G, if q ∈ [Copf ] is such that RG(q) = 0 then [mid ]q[mid ] [les ] 1. We verify that this conjectured property of RG(q) holds if G is a series-parallel network. The proof is by an application of the Hermite–Biehler theorem and development of a theory of higher-order interlacing for polynomials with only real nonpositive zeros. We conclude by establishing some new inequalities which are satisfied by the f-vector of any matroid without coloops, and by discussing some stronger inequalities which would follow (in the cographic case) from the Brown–Colbourn conjecture, and are hence true for cographic matroids of series-parallel networks.

We study the coefficients of algebraic functions ∑n≥0fnzn. First, we recall the too-little-known fact that these coefficients fn always admit a closed form. Then we study their asymptotics, known to be of the type fn ~ CAnnα. When the function is a power series associated to a context-free grammar, we solve a folklore conjecture: the critical exponents α cannot be 1/3 or −5/2; they in fact belong to a proper subset of the dyadic numbers. We initiate the study of the set of possible values for A. We extend what Philippe Flajolet called the Drmota–Lalley–Woods theorem (which states that α=−3/2 when the dependency graph associated to the algebraic system defining the function is strongly connected). We fully characterize the possible singular behaviours in the non-strongly connected case. As a corollary, the generating functions of certain lattice paths and planar maps are not determined by a context-free grammar (i.e., their generating functions are not ℕ-algebraic). We give examples of Gaussian limit laws (beyond the case of the Drmota–Lalley–Woods theorem), and examples of non-Gaussian limit laws. We then extend our work to systems involving non-polynomial entire functions (non-strongly connected systems, fixed points of entire functions with positive coefficients). We give several closure properties for ℕ-algebraic functions. We end by discussing a few extensions of our results (infinite systems of equations, algorithmic aspects).
