2 The inappropriateness of this sense of socius here is clearly illustrated by Cic. ad Fam. i. 9. 22, where socius is coupled with comes. Cicero promises himself as a faithful ally to Lentulus: me quidem certe tuarum actionum, sententiarum, voluntatum, rerum denique omnium socium comitemque habebis, neque mihi in omni vita res tam erit ulla proposita, quam ut cotidie vehementius te de me optime meritum esse laetere.
