1 The fact that his own religion is that of the Church of Rome has given rise to some singularly pointless attacks on his views. His attitude would be essentially the same if he were a pious Lutheran or a devout follower of Gautama or Mohammed, provided that he kept the liberal attitude and absence of any kind of fanaticism which marks his work. A certain dislike of Jews and Judaism may here and there be detected.
