For statistical inference on the unknown parameter θ of a probability distribution with a known form of its density function f(x | θ), the late Sir R. A. Fisher suggests that inference should be based on the observed value of a sufficient statistic when it exists. In the absence of a sufficient statistic, fiducial probability statements about θ can still be made, according to Fisher, if we can find an ancillary statistic so that "the most likely estimate could be made exhaustive by means of the ancillary values" [1, p. 138].

In this paper we consider the types of pairs of multiple zeros which a solution to the differential equation

can possess on an interval I of the real line. The results obtained generalize those in [2] and (for n = 3) in [3].

The following theorem was conjectured to hold by P. Erdös [1]:

Theorem 1. For each finite directed tree T with no directed path of length 2, there exists a constant c(T) such that if G is any directed graph with n vertices and at least c(T)n edges and n is sufficiently large, then T is a subgraph of G.

In this note we give a proof of this conjecture. In order to prove Theorem 1, we first need to establish the following weaker result.

Let R be a commutative ring with unity and let M(R) be the multiplicative group of 4 x 4 triangular matrices (aij) over R, where a11 is a unit element of R and aii = 1 for i = 2, 3, 4. If V(=AN2 ∧ N2A) denotes the variety of groups which are both abelian-by-class-2 and class-2-by-abelian, then it is routine to verify that M(R) ∊ V. Here we prove the following,

Theorem. Let F(V) denote the free group of finite or countable infinite rank of the variety V. Then for a suitable choice of R, F(V) is embedded in M(R).

The purpose of this paper is not to solve a problem but to pose one that may be of some interest, depth, and consequence.

Given that the positive integer n has the canonical representation n = Πhi=1 piαi the problem of finding the number F(n) = f(α1, α2, … αn) of ordered factorizations of n into positive nontrivial integral factors is equivalent to that of finding the number of ordered partitions of the vector (α1, α2, … αn) into nonzero vectors with nonnegative integral components.

Let L(P) denote the total edge length and A(P) the total surface area of a three-dimensional convex polyhedron P. In [5] it was shown that if P belongs to the set of all polyhedra with triangular faces then for all

with equality if and only if is a regular tetrahedron.

It is not difficult to establish the inequality

Cordes and Labrousse ([2] p. 697), and Kaniel and Schechter ([6] p. 429) showed that if S and T are domain-dense closed linear operators on a Hilbert space H into itself, the range of S is closed in H and the codimension of the range of S is finite, then, (TS)* = S*T*. With a somewhat different approach and more restricted condition on S, the same assertion was obtained by Holland [5] recently, that S is a bounded everywhere-defined linear operator whose range is a closed subspace of finite codimension in H.

A selfmapping f of a metric space (X, d) is nonexpansive (ε-nonexpansive) if d(f(x), f(y)) ≤ d(x, y) for all x, y ∊ X (respectively if d(x, y) < ε). In [1], M. Edelstein proved that a nonexpansive mapping f of En admits a fixed point provided the f-closure of En (i.e. the set of all points which are cluster points of {fn(x)} for some x) is nonempty. R. D. Holmes [2] considered commutative semigroups of selfmappings of a metric space and obtained fixed point theorems for such semigroups under certain contractivity conditions.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate for graphs the existence of certain valuations which have some "magic" property. The question about the existence of such valuations arises from the investigation of another kind of valuations which are introduced in [1] and are related to cyclic decompositions of complete graphs into isomorphic subgraphs.

Throughout this paper the word graph will mean a finite undirected graph without loops or multiple edges having at least one edge. By G(m, n) we denote a graph having m vertices and n edges, by V(G) and E(G) the vertex-set and the edge-set of G, respectively. Both vertices and edges are called the elements of the graph.

In this note we apply a theorem of T. Mitchell on fixed points of contraction maps to a particular set of contraction maps of metric spaces. Also, part of Mitchell's theorem is extended to permit application, under suitable conditions, when the space involved is not compact.

We employ the following terminology due to Mitchell [1]. Let S be a semigroup; m(S) the space of all bounded real functions on S with sup norm; and X a subset of m(S). For all s ∊ S, the left translation ls {right translation rs} of m(s) by s is given by (lsf)(s') = f(ss') {(rsf)(s')=f(s's)} where f ∊ m(S) and s' ∊ S.

The purpose of this exposition is threefold. Firstly, we wish to show that many concepts and arguments carry over from pre-ordered sets to categories. Secondly, we wish to make some propaganda for the notion of "subequalizer" of two functors, which appears to be more fundamental than Lawvere's so-called "commacategory", in the same sense in which equalizers are more fundamental than pullbacks. Thirdly, we wish to give simple proofs of the adjoint functor theorem and related theorems, which appear to be more economic than those in the literature. The author wishes to take this opportunity to refine some arguments that he has published earlier. He is indebted to Michael Barr, whose presentation of similar proofs in his course has provided the stimulation for preparing this note for publication, to John Isbell for his critical reading of the manuscript and to William Schelter for suggesting a shortcut in one of the proofs.

If is a universal algebra, the set of endomorphisms of forms a monoid (i.e., semigroup with identity) under composition. We denote it by End (). For definitions and notations, see [1]. It is well known (e.g., [1], Theorem 12.3) that for any monoid M there is a unary algebra with M ≅ End (). E. Mendelsohn and Z. Hedrlin [3] have proved that the monoid of a subalgebra of an algebra is independent of the monoid of . In [2], Hedrlin proves the same for the monoid of a homomorphic image of . The proofs of these depend heavily on graph-theoretical and category-theoretical considerations. In this note considerably shorter direct algebraic proofs are given of these results.

Suppose there are N not necessarily distinct points on a plane in such a position that any triangle (degenerate or non-degenerate) determined by these points has perimeter length at most 1. Denote by m the number of triangles with maximal perimeter length, (briefly, the number of maximal triangles), and put f(N) = max m where the maximum is taken over all permissible configurations. At the Colloquim on Graph Theory in Calgary, 1969, P. Erdös proposed the problem of determining f(N). He conjectured that the following construction gives the maximal number: place approximately half of the points at a point A and the others at B where AB = 1/2. The aim of this note is to prove this conjecture.

Let A be a commutative complex Banach algebra with identity e. Gleason [1] (cf. also Kahane and Żelazko [2]) has given the following characterization of maximal ideals in A.

Theorem. A subspace X ⊂ A of codimension one is a maximal ideal in A if and only if it consists of non-invertible elements.

The proofs given by Gleason and by Kahane and Żelazko are both based on the use of Hadamard's factorization theorem for entire functions. In this note we show that this can be avoided by using elementary properties of analytic functions.

Let L denote a semi-simple, finite dimensional Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero. If denotes a Cartan subalgebra of L and denotes the centralizer of in the universal enveloping algebra U of L, then it has been shown that each algebra homomorphism (called a "mass-function" on ) uniquely determines a linear irreducible representation of L. The technique involved in this construction is analogous to the Harish-Chandra construction [2] of dominated irreducible representations of L starting from a linear functional . The difference between the two results lies in the fact that all linear functionals on are readily obtained, whereas since is in general a noncommutative algebra the construction of mass-functions is decidedly nontrivial.

Let (X, , μ) and (Y, , ν) be two σ-finite measure spaces. An operator T, defined by h = Tf, which maps functions on X into functions on Y is called quasilinear if T(f+g) is uniquely defined whenever Tf and Tg are defined, and if

A tournament Tn is a set of n nodes a1a2, …, an such that every pair (ai, aj) of distinct nodes is joined by exactly one of the oriented edges or . If is in Tn, then we say that ai dominates aj and write ai → aj.

The (automorphism) group G(Tn) of a tournament Tn is the group of all permutations ϕ of the nodes of Tn such that ϕ(a)→ϕ(b) if and only if a → b. It is known [9] that there exist tournaments whose group is abstractly isomorphic to a given group H if and only if H has odd order; thus all tournament groups are solvable, by the Feit-Thompson Theorem [7].

Let T—c be a Fredholm operator, where T is a bounded linear operator on a complex Banach space and c is a scalar, the set of all such scalars is called the Φ-set of T [2] and was studied by many authors. In this connection, the purpose of the present paper is to investigate some classes Φ(V) of all such operators for any subset V of the complex plane.

Let X be a Banach space over the field C of complex numbers with dim Z = ∞, unless otherwise stated, B(X) the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators and K(X) the closed two-sided ideal of all compact operators on X.

Let B be a ring with unity, A a imitai subring of the centre Cof B. Suppose further that B is A-integral. (That is, every element of B satisfies a monic polynomial with coefficients in A.) Under these assumptions, Hoechsmann [2] showed that "contraction to A" is a mapping from:

2. (2) The maximal ideals of B onto the maximal ideals of A.

In this note we show that, under additional assumptions, a noncommutative version of the rest of the Cohen-Seidenberg "going up theorem" can be established.
