SPRUCE CONE INSECTS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THEIR CONTROL

Abstract

Insects cause considerable loss of seed in white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, and Engelmann spruce, P. engelmannii Parry, in British Columbia. The most important species are a maggot, Hylemya anthracina (Cz.), and a seed moth, Laspeyresia youngana (Kit.). Other insects are: a seed chalcid, Megastigmus piceae Roh., a cone axis midge, Dasineura rachiphaga Tripp, a gall midge, D. canadensis Felt, a seed midge, Mayetiola carpophaga Tripp, and a scale-feeding midge. These insects also occur in cones of Sitka spruce, P. sitchensis (Bong.) Carr., and black spruce, P. mariana (Mill.) BSP.

The systemic insecticides dimethoate and formothion proved to be effective against these insects when applied as sprays following pollination in mid-June.

Résumé

Les insectes causent des pertes considérables de graines chez l’Epinette blanche [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss.] et l’Epinette d’Engelmann (P. engelmannii Parry) dans la Colombie Britannique. Les plus importantes espèces entomologiques impliquées sont un asticot, Hylemya anthracina (Cz.) et un papillon des graines, Laspeyresia youngana (Kft.). Puis viennent : un chalcis des graines (Megastigmus piceae Roh.), une cécidomyie gallicole (D. canadensis Felt), une cécidomyie des graines (Mayetiola carpophaga Tripp) et une cécidomyie qui se nourrit des écailles. Ces insectes se retrouvent également dans les cônes de l’Epinette de Sitka [P. sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] et de l’Epinette noire [P. mariana (Mill.) BSP.].

Vaporisés à la mi-juin, consécutivement à la pollinisation, les insecticides par ingestion dimethoate et formothion se sont avérés efficaces contre ces insectes.
