SEX PHEROMONE OF THE SPRUCE BUDWORM (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE): EVIDENCE FOR A MISSING COMPONENT

Wind tunnel experiments confirmed the optimum blend of the two major components of the sex pheromone of the spruce bud worm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), (E)- and (Z)-11-tetradecenal, to be close to a ratio of 95(E):5(Z). The addition of two minor components, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and the saturated tetradecanal, previously identified in the effluvia of calling virgin females, showed that the acetate alone reduced the level of some responses, while the addition of tetradecanal to the acetate:aldehyde blend restored response to previous levels. Addition of tetradecanal alone showed only minor effects on responses. Males responding to calling females showed higher levels of response and sustained flight longer than did males responding to the four-component blend, and this fact suggests that the blend is incomplete.

Résumé

Des expériences en soufflerie ont montré que le rapport optimal des deux principaux constituants le tétradécène-11E al et le tétradécène-11Z al de la phéromone sexuelle de la tordeuse des bourgeons de l'épinette, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), est voisin de 95/5 respectivement. L'addition de deux constituants mineurs des effluves des femelles vierges en chaleur, l'acétate de tétradécène-11E yle et le tétradécanal, a les effets suivants : l'acétate seul atténue certaines réactions tandis que le tétradécanal, ajouté au mélange d'acétate et d'aldéhydes, en rétablit l'intensité. Le tétradécanal seul a peu d'effet sur les réactions. Les mâles attirés par des femelles réagissent plus intensément et volent plus longtemps que ceux qui répondent au mélange des quatre constituants, ce qui porte à croire que ce mélange est incomplet.
