A REVISION OF THE GENUS CARPHACIS DES GOZIS (COLEOPTERA: STAPHYLINIDAE) OF NORTH AMERICA

Abstract

The genus Carphacis des Gozis (Staphylinidae: Tachyporinae) is revised and recognized as a valid genus rather than a subgenus of Lordithon Thomson (= Bolitobius auctorum). Three species, dimidiatus Erichson, intrusus Horn, and nepigonensis Bernhauer are recognized as valid and transferred from Lordithon to Carphacis. Bolitobius dimidiatus humeralis Melsheimer is considered a new synonym of C. dimidiatus, and B. ruber Malkin and B. intrusus wallisi Malkin are considered new synonyms of C. nepigonensis. All taxa are described and illustrated and maps showing the known distribution of each species are included. A key is presented to aid in distinguishing the North American and only known Palearctic species.

Résumé

Le genre Carphacis des Gozis (Staphylinidae : Tachyporinae) est révisé et reconnu comme un genre authentique plutôt qu’un sous-genre de Lordithon Thomson (= Bolitobius auctorum) Trois espèces, dimidiatus Erichson, intrusus Horn et nepigonensis Bernhauer sont reconnues comme certaines et passent donc de Lordithon à Carphacis. Bolitobius dimidiatus humeralis Melsheimer est considéré comme un nouveau synonyme de C. dimidiatus, alors que B. ruber Malkin et B. intrusus wallisi Malkin sont tenus pour de nouveaux synonymes de C. nepigonensis. L’auteur décrit et illustre tous les taxons et présente des cartes de distribution connue de chaque espèce. L’article comprend également une clef pour aider à distinguer les trois espèces nord-américaines de la seule espèce paléarctique connue.
