EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON OVIPOSITION AND EGG DEVELOPMENT IN THE SPOTTED TENTIFORM LEAFMINER, PHYLLONORYCTER BLANCARDELLA (LEPIDOPTERA: GRACILLARIIDAE)

Abstract

The threshold temperature (t0) for both oviposition and egg development and the thermal constant (K) for egg development were determined using linear regression analysis for an Ontario population of the spotted tentiform leafminer, Phyllonorycter blancardella (Fabr.). Fecundity was highly variable, ranging from 1 to 152 eggs, and was not significantly affected by temperature. Calculation of the daily oviposition rates for the first 4 days of the experiment and for the period from the beginning of the experiment until the day on which the last egg was laid resulted in estimates of the oviposition threshold of 9.1 and 8.9°C, respectively. The threshold temperature for egg development was estimated as 2.5°C and the thermal constant for egg development as 172.5 degree-days.

Résumé

Le seuil de température (t0), pour l’oviposition et le développement des oeufs, et la constante thermique (K) pour le développement des oeufs d’une population de Phyllonorycter blancardella (Fabr.) ont été déterminés au moyen d’une analyse par régression linéaire. La fécondité s’est révélée très variable, se situant entre 1 et 152 oeufs, et elle n’a pas subi de façon importante les effets de la température. Le calcul du rythme quotidien de ponte au cours des 4 premiers jours de l’expérience et au cours de la période allant du début de l’expérience jusqu’au jour où le dernier oeuf a été pondu a permis d’évaluer le seuil de température pour l’oviposition à 9,1 et 8,9°C respectivement. Le seuil de température pour le développement des oeufs a été évalué à 2,5°C et la constante thermique pour le développement des oeufs à 172,5 degrés-jours.
