Dasineura plicatrix (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae): a recent introduction into North America

Abstract

The first record of a European blackberry leaf gall midge, Dasineura plicatrix (Loew), is confirmed from North America. Specimens were reared from damaged leaves of blackberry, Rubus laciniatus Willd. (thornless variety ‘Chester’), and red raspberry, R. idaeus L. (variety ‘Cascade Delight’) (Rosaceae), in southwestern British Columbia. Photographs of the damage and illustrations of the male terminalia and female ovipositor are presented to assist future determinations.

Résumé

Nous confirmons la première récolte de la cécidomyie européenne des feuilles de la ronce, Dasineura plicatrix (Loew), en Amérique du Nord. Les spécimens ont été obtenus par élevage sur des feuilles endommagées de ronces Rubus laciniatus Willd. (variété ‘Chester’ sans épines) et de framboisiers rouges, R. idaeus L. (variété ‘Cascade Delight’) (Rosaceae), dans le sud de la Colombie- Britannique. Nous incluons des photographies des dommages ainsi que des illustrations des organes génitaux du mâle et de l’ovipositeur de la femelle pour faciliter les identifications futures.
