AN ECONOMIC THRESHOLD FUNCTION FOR THE TWOSPOTTED SPIDER MITE, TETRANYCHUS URTICAE (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE), ON STRAWBERRIES

Abstract

The growth and yield responses of “Totem” strawberries, Fragaria × ananassa, to 4 introduction densities of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, were observed under field conditions in the lower Fraser Valley. At the high-density treatments T. urticae populations peaked at 65 mites/leaflet and declined during harvest. At the medium- and low-density treatments and in the controls, T. urticae had lower and later peaks. Two species of insect predators and 1 phytoseiid species preyed upon T. urticae. Berry weight and number were predicted (R = 0.97, 12 df) from the number of flowering stalks and accumulated mite-days. Yields increased with increasing numbers of flowering stalks and declined with increasing accumulated mite-days. A $1300 yield loss/ha was observed when 2500 mite-days accumulated between 15 May and 16 July. Fruit size was not affected by T. urticae. Yield equations were developed so that a mite sample 1–5 weeks before harvest can be used to predict dollars lost due to T. urticae. The data allow the grower to determine an economic threshold based on the number of weeks before harvest, mite sample precision, differences in environmental conditions relative to the present study, the control measure to be used, and the market price to the grower.

Résumé

Nous avons observé dans un champ de la vallée du bas Fraser l’effet de 4 densités du tétranyque à deux points, Tetranychus urticae Koch, sur la croissance et la récolte de fraisier “Totem”, Fragaria × ananassa. A la densité élevée, le nombre de T. urticae a atteint 65 par folioles, puis a décliné pendant la récolte. A la densité faible et à la densité moyenne le nombre de T. urticae ont atteint leur maximum plus tard et ont été moindres. Deux espèces d’insectes et 1 espèce de phytoseiidé ont été noté comme prédatrices de T. urticae. Le poids et le nombre de fruits peuvent être prédits (R = 0.97, 12 dl) d’après le nombre de tiges portant des fleurs et l’accumulation de jours-acariens. On a observé une perte à la récolte de $1300/ha après 2500 jours-acariens accumulés entre le 15 mai et le 16 juillet. Le tétranyque à deux points n’a pas affecté la grosseur des fruits. Des équations ont été développées qui permettent de prédire les pertes dues aux tétranyques à partir d’échantillons de cet acarien prélevés 1–5 semaines avant la récolte. Les données permettent aux producteurs de déterminer un seuil de tolérance à partir du nombre de semaines avant la récolte, de la précision de l’échantillonnage d’acariens, de différences d’environment de cette étude, des méthodes de lutte envisagées, et du prix de vente de la récolte.
