EFFECT OF TILLAGE ON GROUND BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE): A FARM-SCALE STUDY IN CENTRAL ALBERTA

Abstract

The effect of conservation and conventional tillage on carabid communities was compared using pitfall trapping in two commercial barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) fields located 4 km apart on similar soils. Carabid abundance was significantly higher under conventional tillage but abundances of individual species varied between the two fields. Agonum placidum Say and two Amara Bonelli species were more abundant at the conventional tillage farm whereas Pterostichus adstrictus Eschscholtz and three Bembidion Latreille species were significantly more abundant at the reduced tillage farm. Slightly more carabid species were collected in this latter field and species diversity and evenness were significantly higher.

Résumé

Les effets du type de labour (conservateur ou traditionnel) sur les communautés de carabes ont été étudiés au moyen de pièges à fosses et comparés dans deux plantations commerciales d’orge (Hordeum vulgare L.) distantes de 4 km, à sols semblables. L’abondance des carabes était significativement plus élevée dans le champ labouré selon les méthodes traditionnelles, mais l’abondance d’espèces particulières variait d’un champ à l’autre : Agonum placidum Say et deux espèces d’Amara Bonelli étaient plus abondantes à la ferme labourée selon les méthodes traditionnelles, alors que Pterostichus adstrictus Eschscholtz et trois espèces de Bembidion Latreille étaient significativement plus abondantes à la ferme labourée de façon plus conservatrice; le nombre d’espèce récoltées dans ce champ était légèrement plus élevé et la diversité de même que l’équitabilité y étaient significativement plus élevées.
