page 69 note 1 William Petrie. Entered the civil service in 1765. Member of the Madras Council in 1791.

page 69 note 2 Dr. Gilbert Pasley, brother of Admiral Sir Thomas Pasley. Appointed Surgeon General at Madras in 1780. Died the following year.

page 69 note 3 Alexander Davidson. Joined as writer in 1760. Sheriff in 1768. Became Member of the Madras Council and of the Select Committee. Sent on a special mission to Tanjore by Macartney. Provisional Governor in 1785. Died at Vizagapatam in 1791.

page 70 note 1 George Moubray arrived in Madras as Government Accountant in 1771. Became the first Accountant-General. Member of the Board of Revenue in 1791. Returned to England in 1792.

page 71 note 1 George Darby. Relieved Gibraltar in 1781. M.P. for Plymouth, 1780–1784. Died 1790.

page 71 note 2 John Towson. Supporter of Laurence Sulivan.

page 71 note 3 Josias Du Pré. Entered the civil service in 1752. Governor of Madras, 1770–1773.

page 72 note 1 James Moffat.

page 74 note 1 Stephen Sulivan. Son of Laurence Sulivan. Entered the Madras service as Secretary and Persian translator in 1778. Appointed Resident at Tanjore by the Directors but transferred to Bengal by Hastings.

page 75 note 1 General John Carnac (1716–1800). Transferred from H.M.'s 39th regiment to the Company's army. Defeated the Marathas in 1765. Member of the Bombay Council, 1776–1779. Dismissed for his share in the disgraceful Convention of Wadgaon.

page 86 note 1 Subordinate chiefs peculiar to the Madras Presidency.

page 89 note 1 General Joseph Smith. Ensign in 1749. Gained victory over Hyder and the Nizam at Trinomalai in 1767. Superseded by the Madras Council but reinstated. Took Tanjore in 1773. Retired 1775. Died 1790.

page 92 note 1 Pulbandi, money paid for the repair of bridges and embankments in Bengal. A nickname of Sir Elijah Impey in allusion to a lucrative contract given to his relative a Mr. Fraser.

page 94 note 1 David Anderson who negotiated for Hastings the Treaty of Salbai in 1782.
