page 70 note 1 This refers to a project thrown out by Monteleon for strict friendship between Britain and Spain to secure: (1) the peaceful succession of Don Carlos to Parma and Tuscany; (2) compensations for the Electress Palatine who had been recognized as the Grand Duke's successor by the Sesate of Florence; (3) the succession of one of Philip's children to the throne of France in the event of the death of Louis XV, a project for which he claimed to have gained the support of Townshend and Carteret at The Hague in 1723. page 196 note 1 See P.R.O., Confidential IA, Morville to Broglie, Fontainebleau, 5 Sept. 1726 N.S.

page 201 note 1 The “long letter from Mr. Manteuffel to Mr. Le Cocq” is a Pro resolutione pour le Sieur Le Cocq, dated Warsaw, 7 Sept. 1726, covering eleven folios in reply to certain queries sent by Le Cocq, together with a covering letter from Manteuffel. The “relation” of Count Hoym to the King of Poland is an interesting comment, dated Bourbon l'Archanibaut, 12 Sept. 1726 N.S., from the point of view of a Polish statesman on British policy in the Baltie and the West Indies (P.R.O., Confidential, 1A).

page 222 note 1 The essential sentence of this long letter, dated Berlin, 8 Feb., 1726/7, is as follows:—
