page 16 note a Walter Mountague, a younger son of Henry Montague earl of Manchester. He went over to the Church of Rome early in the reign of Charles I. and was a very busy person in the intrigues of that period. Standing high in the favour both of the queen regent of France and of Henrietta Maria, he was promoted to the abbacy of Nanteuil, and afterwards to that of St. Martin near Pontoise.
