page 113 note a The Editor is unable to give a satisfactory interpretation of berebarde. Mr. Singer, in the Notes and Queries, [vol. ii. 204,] suggests its derivation from “Berbi. O. F. Chancre, dartre; a boil, bubo, or tetter, commonly attendant upon pestilential fever.” If this be its true derivation, which appears likely, we may conclude that it means some kind of cutaneous eruption. “An efflorescence like the measles is frequently met with in malignant fevers; and sometimes black, livid, dun, or greenish spots appear, which always indicate a high degree of malignity,”—Edinb. Practice of Physic and Surgery. London, 1800, p. 121.
