The pope, Gregory XIII., not the king of Spain, in 1579 sent Sanders as his agent into Ireland, with Bitzmaurice, who was nominated General with a commission to raise troops in the pope's name. Philip secretly aided the enterprise, and subsequently sent reinforcements. See Calendar of Spanish Papers (Bliz. vol. ii. p. 166).
