Among the many families in Lancashire that remained so long loyal to the Catholic faith were the Scarisbricks of Scarisbrick Hall near Ormskirk, a centre of Catholicism throughout penal times and where there was even a Catholic school intermittently in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
