The two writers have been involved for a number of years with research on the Romano-British settlement at Lower Wanborough. Recent field-work, and aerial photographs taken of some remarkable cropmarks, have shown that the site was not an irregular linear growth along the main highway, but had developed a system of insulae in which was a substantial Mansio.
