175 See inscription formerly on lead of roof and transcribed in the Knowles Scrap Book, York City Library. Inscription probably removed when roof releaded in Sydney Smirke's (q.v.) restoration 1843-45. There can, however, be only a little of John Terry's work left in the present roof.

176 Y.M.L. (A4(l)a), Carr's Survey of the State of the Minster 1770, says this roof is ‘new framed’. The bills for Martinmas 1762–63 show that it almost certainly dates from 1763 and was made by Leonard Terry. His bill is for £153. All but £12 is for ‘repairing ye roof. Twelve joiners were engaged in the work and four on sawing timber. A thousand and twenty feet of oak were bought. Terry's bill does not say which roof. But in the bill of the mason, Robert Sisson, is the cost of‘repairing the battlement of the south side of the Church. Making the wall good where the joiners lay the timber and helping the joiners and plumbers.’ There is also a plumber's bill for casting and laying the lead for the ‘new roof’. This roof must be the existing one at the eastern end of the south choir aisle. No substantial work has been done here since the eighteenth century apart from some repairs in teak after the 1829 fire. The bills cannot mean the roof of the south aisle of the nave, as Carr in his survey commented unfavourably on its condition.

177 Browne, p. 317, says as a result of Carr's Survey in 1770, the roofs of the north and south transepts were repaired or renovated. Y.M.L. (B4), Papers 1840–44 restoration, in a report on the fabric made to the Chapter by Sydney Smirke in 1842, he comments favourably on the south transept roof and says it was put up ‘about seventy years since’. Further on, in mentioning the roof again, he says it was constructed about ‘fifty years since’. But the ‘fifty’ is crossed out. Seventy years from 1842 brings us nearly to 1776; and this date is on one of the tie beams. In the Fabric Ace. 1662–1828, in the Disbursements for 1774–75 and 1775–76 are payments to Leonard Terry of £78 17 and £195 respectively; and also large payments for raff £118.12 and £74.14. Unfortun ately, of course, no details are given as to what these payments were for; and the bills for these two years have not survived, though Browne speaks as if he had seen them. It seems reasonable to date this roof 1776, as there is no evidence in the accounts that much work was done here after 1776, apart from the alterations in 1796–97. For scissor trusses, see Y.M.L. (B3), Papers 1871–80 south transept restoration, receipt 196.
