The Ravenna Cosmography, Argistillum and Wales

Abstract

The location of Argistillum in the Ravenna Cosmography has been obscure. This paper uses linguistic and historical analysis to suggest that it was the Roman fort at Caersws, in the cantref (district) of Arwystli, still with a name relatable to Argistillum.

L'emplacement d'Argistillum dans la Cosmographie de Ravenne est obscur. Ce document utilise une analyse linguistique et historique pour suggérer qu'il s'agissait du fort romain de Caersws, dans le cantref (district) d'Arwystli, nom qui peut être rapproché d'Argistillum.

Zusammenfassung

Es war bisher unklar, wo sich der Standort von Argistillum auf der Weltkarte des anonymen Geographen von Ravenna befindet. In diesem Referat wird anhand linguistischer und historischer Analysen nahegelegt, dass es sich dabei um das römische Fort von Caersws im cantref (Bezirk) Arwystli handeln könnte, da dieser Name auch heute noch einen Bezug zu Argistillum hat.
