Approximations in the variable net energy system for ruminants

Abstract

The variable net energy system for ruminants was developed to allow rations to be formulated in an additive manner. It is demonstrated that the variable net energy system is based on approximations which can cause errors in ration formulation. The extent of these errors is examined for cattle rations, and it is shown that the errors can be significant.
