20 The Rev. Nicholas Devereux, whom Bishop Scallan had brought to Newfoundland with him in 1816. Advanced to the priesthood by Bishop Scallan in the same year, he thereby became the first priest to be ordained in Newfoundland. After ministering at various places on the island, he died at King’s Cove in 1845 (Howley, op. cit., 243).
