2 In Senator Proxmire's case, Huitt gives two conflicting interpretations of this rejection: first, he argues that Proxmire's nonconformity to Senate folkways was a result of his personality and “compulsive independence” which more or less inevitably drove him into nonconformity; second, he argues that Proxmire exercised choice in the selection of his role.
